The point is "forward voltage" is not a fixed value, for any diode it varies with forward current. So Yoh-DUH87 could well be right, though at 3v it's a bit near the knuckle. But I've lit a blue (very dimly) at 2.6v
It should not be too dificult, what was being discussed is if the LEDs would turn on or not Signing out...
lol, i realize that, just the forward breakover voltage, diode, forward bias, avalanche voltage, etc, etc is beyond me. Wouldn't the problem be solved if you had the same LED only in blue? Sorry, I don't even know if they sell them like that or not, just a newbie question. DDK
hehe It is ok, it takes a while to learn these things I think that 3v LEDs should be just fine, please someone corrcet me if I'm wrong. I asked mashie, who used a similar kit, so we'll see Signing out...
I have another quick question, since I added leads for the leds on all the fans I have 8 wires to run to the switch and power, what's a good way to hook up all these dam wires, I was looking at ratshack at a speaker terminal thingy...lol...looked like it'd work instead of soldering all the wires together.... DDK
There are a few options, I would solder them together, but that is just me Is this what you're talking about? If so, it's called a terminal barrier strip, and I actualy have a few (bigger than the ones in the picture) waiting in the wings for my next project They are very nice I can't find any info on the LED voltages, they (velleman) are prety sneakey about it I would guess that they are 3v, as the MCD is rather low. If you have a multimeter, it would be very easy to figure out! Sorry I couldn't be of more help! Signing out...
No, Yo-DUH_87 You were great help! Thanks so much! So the final word is get a 5mm 3v blue led and try it out eh? I take it no one has seen a vu meter done in all blue huh? I hit a few mod stores and see : -------- casemod.com Specs: Emitting Color: Blue Wavelength(nm): 470 Lens Type: Water Clear Typ. MCD: 1500mcd Typ Voltage: 3.5v (4.0v Max) mA: 20 Viewing Angle: 34 Lead Length: 27mm ---------- And directron has: These units are ultra-bright with clear casing, and are used with a 470ohm resistor when used with a 12v source. This item also needs an LED clip to be mounted. Mounts in a 1/4in hole. The blue LED is 2.0v, 20mA, and is used with a 470ohm resistor. 2.0v, 20mA, 630mcd. Does anyone know where I could get a better suited led(s) for this project, let me know! So if I try this I need to get a led rated close to 3v? I'm really sorry guys for asking so many questions but I'd like to give it a try and see if it works. Yes that's the terminal I was refering to... Again, THANKS for the help! DDK
The case-mod.com LEDs would work dandy. You might also try frozencpu.com, they have a good selection of electronic components. digikey is a great place to buy electonic components, I use them all the time. Another good site is allelectronics, they are prety good as well
The casemod.com LEDs won't have a problem shining thru dark plexi will it? I want it to be seen, but not a searchlight .... Thanks man! DDK EDIT: I just noticed the first LEDs I listed are 3mm, they have 5mm listed as: Typ. MCD: 2200mcd Typ. Voltage: 3.5v (4.0v MAX) mA: 20 Viewing Angle: 15 Lead Length: 27mm
ah sorry it took me so long to get back to ya. Anyways, here is the cheapest place i could find that offers the assembled kit for 15 bucks more. Hope everything works out for u. David
I have just placed orders with usplastics and hobbytron, thanks though! I had to do it since I myself don't have a credit card but was allowed to use one, so if we figure out exactly what LEDs I need I can get them ordered!! Thanks! DDK
OK thanks, Just want to double check, these are off Case.Mod.com: 5mm Blue LED - 2200 MCD $0.85 Specs: Emitting Color: Blue Wavelength(nm): 470 Lens Type: Water Clear Typ. MCD: 2200mcd Typ. Voltage: 3.5v (4.0v MAX) mA: 20 Viewing Angle: 15 Lead Length: 27mm These will work fine? No problem seeing them thru grey acrylic?? I'M READY TO ORDER!! WOOHOO!! You guys are really REALLY helpful and I can't thank you enough!!! DDK
You will want to goto http://www.eled.com to get your LEDs' Great place. i bought 500 for 60 bucks!.. David p>s> or better yet.... exact link!
I think this is the same led: http://www.eled.com/product.asp?catalog_name=LEDs&category_name=&product_id=E7113QBC-D They are cheaper at casemod though thanks for the link!! Me off to order a bunch! DDK
Looks good! Case-mod also has a few cheap 80mm LED fans you might want to look at, while you're there, good deal! /me checks banck account ballance, sighs
