Right I have been thinking about getting a new pet, and as my family and myself have a history of slightly differnt pets e.g we currently have a european eagle owl called slippers . I have been thinking about getting some form of lizzard or animal along those lines not a snake or spider though as my mum would have to feed occasionly. ones that stay fairly small and are easy to care for would be preferable as I dont have a huge ammount of space for a tank or what ever the technical name is. Now what I request from all you anphibian bit-techers is a good list of posible animals that would suit my needs, A list of stuff i would need to have to keep good care of the animal i end up choosing and what they eat and any other usefull infomation you think would prove usefull. If you have any other questions for me just ask.
GECKO! The sticky footed ones aren't too friendly but we used to have Fat-tailed geckos, you have to feed them crickets which can be a pain but they are really cool. Don't get a chameleon. They require at least 100-200 crickets a week.
/me sends a twitter to john, the local expert on all things reptilian and amphibian. My recommendation (and i know i want some, but none of the pet shops can help me, and without a shop import here becomes a big issue) would be Poison dart frogs. Most of them become pretty harmless if they're being kept on the right diet. They're also SMALL (as in an inch a piece, some smaller, some bigger), beautiful, and if you have a proper setup, pretty low maintenance (self sustained fruit fly breed in the tank works for some people). Care of them is widely documented, and they can stay in close proximity to each other if you mix them right... my pick; Dendrobates Azureus and Dendrobates Leucomelas Mind - i wouldn't say they're good hand-pets. For that i'd get a horned devil or something along those lines. But Dendrobates are pretty and fairly safe to handle...
I can recommend three very peaceful lizards that fit well into the pet category. 1.) Bearded Dragon. Marilyn my wife has had hers for several years. It's very tame, likes being held and and will eat crickets and veggies out of your hand. They temd to be relatively inexpensive when small and live a nice long age. 2.) Green iguana. Another 'hold me' lizard. They get quite large and are vegatarians. They grow quicker than bearded dragons and really need a large container or access to just roam the house. 3.) Savannah monitor. Very slow growing even in large habitat. Very peaceful if acquired young and hand fed and held. Eats crickets and meal worms. All of these are suitable for a family lifestyle and they take well to small children. I will point you to some pics of ours if you want. john
Realy - for any further questions, ask John. I don't think there's anyone else around here that has as many Reptiles as him... For that matter, i've seen local snake parts that don't feature the arsenal he has...
The bearded dragon sounds very appealing to me have a couple of questions about them -what is their primary diet ment to be? -how big is the one you have had for several years? -what size of tank will be required? should i just get a big one or should i start with a small one and get a bigger one after a while? -how often do they need feeding and how much? -appart from their prmary diets what sort of things can you also give them? I know this sort of stuff may be available on google but other bit-techer's may get inspired by this thread you never know
I am not sure how well that would do with the family dog too considering the dog ins a miniture breed
