I run a small proxy at my school.

I've been using Censornet which has been working fine with default settings.

Censornet is "open source" and is free, but was discontinued a few years ago.

Basicly the machines are filtered by IP
and the users are filtered by ID and password.

This has worked fine, mostly due the the fact the pupils have not clicked to Proxy websites, until this week.

Censornet's big problem here is you can't batch import url's, and using urlblacklist.com's list puts the number of proxysites in the 100,000's which I cant add manually.

So I need a new proxyserver.

Censornet is based on dansguardian, and thats another free/open proxy setup.

But the problem is it has to be set up manually, where ass censornet was pre-configured.

    I need a new filter/proxy, for about 50 computers and 100 users.
as easy to setup and deploy as possible
    and free.

either a good guide for dansguardian (I've looked but not found one that fits my needs) or an alternative.

    Thanks..

    You mis-understand my request.

I run the the filter and want to change to a better filter system.

I was wondering if anyone here had setup dans gaurdian or another filter and had any help or info.

    thanks

You may want to consider this: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/k12/

The page shows that it covers with content filtering based on categories you pick, including a proxies category.

Tie opendns up with a simple caching transparent proxy, which can just be SQUID, and you should find all your content filtering is sorted.

The system works by creating fake DNS zone files for the content you decide to filter, with a redirect to a landing page, instead of allowing the content.

We use SWGfL filtering, probably RM Safety Net, which has it's fair share of problems. We haven't tried any open source solutions, but we did trial Bloxx and Securus which were better than what we're currently using, but just couldn't convince management to pay for them.

There was an issue with Securus on the CC3 where the msi included the "system32\wbem" folder giving errors if you try to de-allocate it, but I guess you could modify the msi with orca.

    Hi.

Are you using Censornet 3.3.x ? If you can explain the URLblacklist format to me, I may be able to help. I used to be a DBA (before I gave into the Dark Side and became an IT exec) and I use Censornet 3.3.6 at home and my son's school. Plus I teach Perl.

I downloaded the blacklist. Is there a man page for it somewhere ?

Let me know if you're interested.
