I've been lurking around bit-tech forums for about a month now and the temptation to mod my computer has been growing since I came here. I finally found a good enough excuse to register and start a mod. I'm planning on getting a new Sony LCD this Christmas and I realized that my keyboard and mouse wouldn't match my all black computer. So, I've come up with the ingenious idea of painting them black and silver or chrome. I've never done any PC modding before but I do know a few basic skills. Here's some pictures of my mouse: And here's my keyboard: Yes, Microsoft does make the best keyboards and mice. I was thinking painting the mouse black except for the parts that are silver, and either paint them a darker silver or use some spray-on chrome stuff. Which one do you think I should do? For the keyboard, I have no idea how I want to paint it. I was thinking maybe silver/chrome the part around the volume/play buttons, use the black used on the mouse for the blue parts, and a lighter black for the middle. I dunno if I want to paint the keys, it would look a lot better, but I don't think they'll have all the print on the keys for the all the buttons up top. I'd like to replace the LED's with blue ones to match the power LED on my case. I'm open to suggestions on this. If you know of any very realistic chrome spraypaints let me know. ~Suaves
I always like to go to Auto Zone or some other automotive store and check out their paint selection. 99% of the time, they have chrome paint. But I've also seen it at Sherman Williams, Walmart, and Home Depot.
I did the exact same thing you want to do with your mouse. Get vinyl dye. You can find this at Autozone or any other automotive store in the paint section, look for "Duplicolor" brand. Make sure you clean the plastic with soap and water, then allow it to air dry before you dye it. Use light coats, with about 10 minutes in between. I've never painted a keyboard (that's next!), but I have changed out the LEDs. Just make sure you get the positive and negative right. Chances are your keyboard has 3mm LEDs. I bought high-intensity blue LEDs from www.frozencpu.com, and when my Numlock is on, I can see a blue circle on the cieling above me. They're pretty bright. You could definitely use the low-powered ones and be fine. I think they sell stickers with the letters on them, so if you were to paint the keys (which looks good, IMO) see if you can find a set.
That's more a matter of opinion. I like my MS Mouse. It does everything I need it to, and it's accurate. Not only that, but it's very simple to mod. The Logitech mouse that I've replaced the LED in was a huge pain. It's very cramped, and is complicated to put back together. I wasn't too impressed. I use neither a MS nor a Logitech keyboard, so I can't comment on that.
SilentDeath, can I see some pics of your mouse? How much did it cost for the vinyl die and chrome? I've never messed around with LED's before, it's just 2 wires to solder, right? I don't want some that are too bright, the 53 LED's I've got already make it hard enough to fall asleep ; especially with the one on my case for power that turns half the room blue . Does anybody have a link to a good web site for keyboard stickers for after painting? Here's a pic of the case the mouse should match. I wish I could find a clear bottom for the mouse so I could use blue LED's in it. (There's now a DVD burner in the top 5 1/4" spot and that CD burner has been moved down.) Thanks. ~Suaves
i use a microsoft elite keyboard that i painted krylon pumpkin orange and one of the simple 2 button and a scroll wheel ms optical mice. i tried opening it, but it wouldnt open. so it stays white. i really want one of those logitech ergonomic wireless keyboards. and a logitech mx 700 wireless mouse. i had one of those microsoft 5 button mice once, but it died. i loved that thing. replaced it with this simple one with the intention of getting a better one in the near future. that future hasnt come yet
Hehe, I love this mouse. I was ordering a couple things for my computer and I saw it and couldn't resist. I got it mainly for playing the UT2004 Demo with 2 more buttons for crouch and alternate fire . It's just so nice with the side buttons. When I first got it I just used the back button in my browser. Now I can barely stand having to move the cursor up to the back button on other people's computers. ~Another good example of a lazy American, Suaves
No, IBM makes the best keyboards.... Oh, wait, I'm thinking of the IBM M keyboards. That they sold to someone else. Who ruined them. Yes, the IBM keyboards with the springs instead of cheap rubber domes under the keys, that sound like a machine gun when you get your typing rythum down pat, and can wake up you spouse in the next room.....
