Erm - dunno. I've just SP'd and nothing untoward happened - but I've got a pukka copy of XP anyway (bought, registered and activated!)
some people are using a shared OEM cdkey. Installing SP1 will grenade your PC, you are not advised to install it if you are not running a fully legit copy of XP.
yeah cos win2k + SP3 with the EULA that reserves Microsoft the right to access your PC, should they see fit, is MUCH better.
i found that extremeley hilarious incase u didnt notice anyways my copy of XP isn't exactly "legit", its shared with a friend, and has naughty activation what exactly is in sp1 that i'd need .. that i dont have now?
(Edit: That site might bring up getting around it, but people can find it for themselves.. - Kna) Ive just gotta download SP1 on 56k! Bah! :cries:
All non-legit copies of XP are very risky to be using if you're thinking of installing SP1 ... AND wanting to continue using Windows Update. SP1 does contain CD Key killers as Spike put it, but that will mainly be the 2 most widely used corporate keys (one of them starts FCKGW [came with the Devils0wn ISO]). If you have one of the banned keys, you will not be able to actually install SP1 at all. If you do install it over an illegal key then you may find that at a later date you can no longer use Windows Update. There are still ways around that though... eg the Corporate section where you can select manually what updates to download and save to your computer (you can also use Windows 2000 and download them, burn to CD and install on XP - can't ban that!). As you may know Microsoft have announced that Windows Update will be reading your Product Key when you visit Windows Update and when v5 goes live (next May) it will compare your key with a database of every key that they have actually generated. This may just be an idle threat, but if it does happen then all that they can do is stop you downloading updates. Microsoft will not know who owns that particular copy of XP. For those making comments about the 2k SP3 EULA, the same EULA applies to XP SP1 too, and don't forget some of the latest updates to WMP contain DRM components that can stop you playing any music not created on your own computer if you aren't too careful. Might be best just to go back to using Windows 2000 SP2.
Those of you openly admitting that you have pirated copies of Windows XP would do well to realise that, if we were contacted by the police and asked to give up Email addresses and IP Addresses, we would have little choice but to comply.. You never know who's watching and I'd consider editing your posts while you can. I have no beef with people who want to run copies that's their business and clearly we don't condone or agree with it, however just bear in mind that in this day and age, the crackdown is getting a lot closer to home than you think.
KNA, for the record, I have a legit copy of 2k. RTT, learning a new OS? UGH!! Why would ANYONE go through the trouble of THAT!? </whine>
yep! once i figure out the basics (installing tar.gz files.. i still dont know how to do it, after reading thousands of sites etc. they all expect me to know where i put those commands etc) i'll probably just use linux! if worst comes to worst i might have to make use of the student cards i get next week and find XP with student discount
