Anyone playing War Of The Roses (beta)? It's kind of like Call of Duty with swords and shields! I spent the first half an hour not managing to hit anyone and wasn't enjoying it at all. Then I remember that the controls are the same as in Mount and Blade and started to sporadically hit people. After a couple of hours I am quite enjoying it - it is definitely different to any other PvP multiplayer I have played and there is a certain satisfaction in wielding a great big sword and twatting people with it!! I have just unlocked longbows and now every barn door in the kingdom is safe from my aim!
Well, I am quite surprised no-one is playing this. I have to say that I am enjoying the experience immensely! It's a bit buggy for sure, but it's totally different to anything else out there!
I must say...I watched a couple hours of gameplay on twitch last night and I may have to pick it up. It was absolute choas!
Yes, it is! It still has some rough edges and it's not got a lot of depth but it is somehow much more satisfying hitting someone with something rather than shooting them!
It's on-line PvP. Currently it has a couple of game types, Conquest (capture the flag) and Team Deathmatch - I am not sure if there will be more, I hope so. The control system is similar to that in M&B in that mouse left is left swing, mouse right is right swing, mouse up is thrust and mouse down is overhead. You can pick from several standard character types (archer, mounted, foot-knight etc) or you can build your own character by levelling up and unlocking the custom character slots. Weapons (swords, knives, crossbows, longbows, lances etc) and perks can be purchased with 'gold'. You earn 'gold' in game by hitting people, killing people, capturing flags, resurrecting people and executing people (execution is a finishing move). The best way to describe it is Call Of Duty with swords but with the M&B control system. The graphics are pretty good and the sound which has just be overhauled is excellent. It floats my boat at the moment that's for sure. It's also a period of history I have always been interested in so that's an extra hook.
Well, you could pre-order on Steam to get into the beta and then cancel the pre-order if you don't like it I suppose. Valve's policy on pre-order refunds is much less strict than after release usually.
I love the English Civil War era, and I love Mount and Blade, so this is like a dream for me. Can't wait to pick it up.
