I beleive i saw somewhere on one of my random google searches a modded Linksys wireless g router running WW-DRT with some seriously big, high gain antennas. Now would it be possible to use/make/mod and utilize one for cross country driving to get a small, but constant internet connection? I wanted to know because I will be doing some highway drving over the summer and I know some of the cell phone companies have really good coverage on the highway im traveling (USA) and being a online college student, i have to work, even when im traveling (no break for the online student :p). so is it possible to do a WW-DRT router with some big, high gain antennas and keep a decent signal? By decent i mean something that will load some standard text based PHP and JSP pages on the web, not anything like Flash or online movies.

Are you sure the internet coverage they are supplying is via WLAN and not 3G?

If it's 3G coverage that linksys router won't work...

not sure... I know some spots will have 3G, EVDO, etc and some will have WLAN. Any tips on getting a good connection? What will pick up 3G signals?

For 3G you will need a 3G Modem, something like these, they are normally sold by the cell companies as you need a SIM and some form of payment plan to access the 3G Network (I'm not from US so can't be specific).

For WLAN you will need a normal network card, the strength of the base stations isn't enough to bother buying something special as they are made for people with laptops.

I have a laptop and a USB Modem for work and only have problems with 3G when I'm in the middle of the countryside near no towns or cities...
