It could be an awesome film if it's cyberpunk enough, but I imagine it would still be an awful rendition of Akira.

That reminds me, I've still got 5 volumes of the manga to read through.

This is going to be to The Matrix what Windows Millenium was to Windows 98SE...

To be honest, as much as I HATE live action of anime, I think Appleseed could work quite well.

The Akira books are so thick you'd have to chop them to shreds to get it all in - even SIX movies at 3hrs long each can't cover a book a time.

Akira is the ONLY Maga I've ever watched or will ever watch.

Have fun poo-ing all over it. :thumb:

It doesn't surprise me that they switched the city, you tend to find that whoever makes the film/tv show in question will have their city as the centre of the universe. The original Godzilla films referenced Tokyo, most American based stuff will have either L.A. or New York and on the rare occasion you see something from the UK it will tend to feature London. I think the UK has London all the time as too many folks in the city seem to think that civilization stops north of the Watford Gap and its all barren wasteland from then onwards.

Doesn't help that most of the people who make TV shows and films are in London too.

There was already a live action Akira. It was called 'Firestarter'.
Have they signed up Vin Diesel yet?(retch) I'm laying bets they find a way to cram Joe Peshi into the storyline...possibly as Takashi?
Can Akira be made into a Broadway musical?

New Manhattan??? With the right group of people this could be amazing, however I guarantee that it will suck on a proportion greater than the likes of which we have ever seen. I LOVE Akira... In fact I am doing a 36-24" painting of the mean streets of NEO-Tokyo as we speak. Do these execs think that the populous is so retarded that we would prefer New York to Tokyo?

The credibility of the team writing this screenplay has much to be desired.

I am an absolute die-hard Akira fan (as most old-schoolers probably know) and have no problem with this whatsoever. I'm more than interested to see what they come up with, especially if it's a proper adaptation of the books. If it's rubbish, big deal, you haven't lost anything have you? We'll all read it all over again. It's not like I've not re-read The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen since Hollywood dropped it's cinematic turd equivalent.

I haven't watched the original Star Wars trilogy since Phantom Menace came out (although that may also have to do with the horrible CGI and changes added).

Sometimes the magic of the old is ruined by the sheer crappiness of the new.

I have one question regarding what little has been said about it so far. Taking place in New York, do you figure the characters will be American, or will there be a convoluted plot element placing a Japanese biker gang AND a massively-secret Japanese scientific experiment there. I am guessing the latter.
