It's probably from the plactic the case is made of. benzene is a pretty common aromatic solvent and is used in the production of a LOT of things.

That said, the actual risk is pretty small. Benzene is a confirmed carcinogin, but a short term exposure to low concentrations is extreemely unlikley to cause harm. Given benzene's relative volatility, it should dissapate after a couple days. Think of it as that "new computer smell"

I think that can't be the case in this situation. People are saying that their Mac Pro's aren't losing smell for a months, not days, months. That means that what you said is not the problem. And it is not low exposure. Lot of people say that they can hardly work on the computer because of very hard smell, even the whole rooms smell when they start computer. But only when they start it. That means the case shouldn't be problem at all. because it is not smelling all the time. But only when computer starts working. That means maybe cooler or something is factory mistake....

bad case material that exposes to heat --> heat generated when turning it on --> bad smell as soon as it's turned on.

(eg, my TRUE touches the side of my case, making outside metal warm after long CPU folding periods. )

case is possible. and i hope it's the case, otherwise all other off-the-shelf computing products will have to be questioned and tested

But all Mac Pro's have the same case I think. And yet not all of them smell bad when they are turned on...? :D So what could it be?

Uhh, the case is aluminum, there's not that much plastic in them anymore. The fans, the pci supports, connectors and whatnot on the mobo, I think that's about it. Pretty much every thing else is aluminum.

We used to put them in the back of the paper trays of our laser printers. Cuts down on the extra static in the winter time. We kept getting this light gray patterns on all the prints. The dryer sheets stopped it.

LOL, As far as I see by surfing on net, this will be one of the topics that PC users will promote vs Mac users. On lot of forums and websites that hate mac, this is the main news :D (I am neutral though - have mac and pc :D )

The case is solid aluminum, so I think that's out. There are a couple of small plastic bits inside (a duct around the HSF assemblies) but that's it.

    Whatever - mine's perfectly fine.

Abit did - I can't remember what product, but they connected a pipe to one of the many hot components in a PC, then made it protrude outside where the end formed some kind of spoon or cup shape. The idea was to put oils in it, so that when the pipe inevitably heated it encouraged the oils to vapourise :)

Apparently there were some heated arguments for and against it (I talked to a lass who now works elsewhere and argued against it) and it never made it to market.

Um, yeah. Big surprise, Apple's been growing steadily for the past five years. Stop spamming that site.

No lets make it specific: HIS site.

Taking a look at his profile the email matches the contact page on the website.

Linking to your own site, acceptable once. Thread started to promote + several links + sig link = pushing the boundaries of acceptable behavior. We try to tread a liberal line between freedom to post what people want, we don't even care if it's competition if it has positive community impact and discussion, but once the line into spam has been crossed we take a zero tolerance to keep bit-forums clean for everyone. The only exception is if people ask first - that's why we let manufacturers do occasional new threads because it benefits the community.

Are we all clear? Keep it in your sig - fine. But post it again and you'll be out on your ear. K?

I am really sorry. It was never my intention to spam here. I like this forum and it is one of my favorite ones. I wanted to add some interesting news that's all but ok... I will do as you sad. Sorry again, didn't mean to do anything wrong.

Apple went down only because of fake stories of citizen journalism at CNN. They said that Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple had an heart attack :D And of course that's not true. That's why Apple went down on market stock

Yes, i was kidding... I hope everyone got that. This issue is still not said everywhere. Well, until a group of people e-mail their news TV station and news paper.
