Can anyone recommend me a decent washing machine?
Or, can anyone help me fix mine?
Looks like mine might need replacing because of the most ridiculous reason...

The drum started to smell at the end of last week so yesterday we decided to give it a clean. Standard procedure of removing the pump filter and draining the nasty water, then running a hot wash with some washing machine cleaner. However, it began to leak during that wash and it turned out that the pump filter had not screwed in properly and it won't go back in properly.

Looks like the rubber seal has swollen and nothing I have tried with get the pump filter back in properly. I've tried to shrink the seal by heating it up, I've greased it up with fairy liquid and I've tried just brute force. I can't find spare parts for this model either (Logik LM612WMS13 I think).

I'm half tempted to slice a tiny section out of the seal and glue it back in place on the filter or even use some silicon seal, but that feels incredibly sketchy.

    Any advice?

Wouldn't you need to make the seal cold to shrink it, that is if the pictures I've looked at are correct and the seal is on the filter that comes away from the machine.

Also it maybe worth running your fingers around the thread on the filter and where it screws into the pump just to check there's no limescale buildup or other damage to the threads that are preventing it from seating properly.

Search for filter by looks and maybe a brand (most parts a shared between couple brands), not by a specific model (looking at catalog, there are a few options, have no idea if they are close)
You could also change whole pump assembly.
Photos of filter/ seal in question might help,

If you're buying a new washer, I can recommend Beko.

Edit: gah, bloody autocorrect! Beko, not Below!

You can get o ring cord from eBay (Sealforce) that and superglue to connect the ends should fix it.

If your washing machine is quite a few years old I'd keep it going as long as possible. The modern ones take ages to run a basic washing cycle.

We have just ordered a new washing machine, after ours decided to throw in the towel after 12 years. I paid a pound for a month of Which membership, to have a look at their reliability survey and the brand with the best showing was LG, which we have gone with.

Managed to get the filter screwed in just enough that it doesn't leak. If I try screw it in further it pops out. If it does start to leak then silicon is the way I'll go.

We bought a new washer a year ago. After much deliberation and very nearly pulling the trigger on an LG, we went with Samsung as they have a 10 year all parts guarantee. Rather than pushing for the hard sell, Currys even told us not to bother with product insurance as we won't need it for 10 years!

FWIW, we did have a Beko previously (both washer and drier - separate appliances) and they just didn't wear well. The drier died after 3 years (lint built up inside the rear of the machine as it got past the filter and condenser despite meticulous cleaning) and the washer although still working at the 5 year point was noisy, squeaky and sounded like it was ready to die.
