I want a decent watch. A DECENT watch. Something I can aspire to, and treat well, and well, something that isn't a Fossil. Or a Diesel. Or any other £100 stamped out Korean movement. I've been looking at a few and I like the idea of getting a watch with an automatic movement. I know, servicing, accuracy, blah blah but I just like the engineered aspect of it. I looked at the Omega railmaster which is lovely and totally the kind of thing I want (except that Omega is usually associated with 40mm-thick Breitling-wearing twunts), but I have also seen this in a shop: http://www.longines.com/watches/the-longines-master-collection/L2.708.4.78.3 That has the date display, which is a big plus. Does anybody know of a similar watch to that, but with a black face? Been looking at vintage ones (saw a 1950s Longines conquest on ebay that was brilliant) but I'm unsure about buying used.
I personally prefer Seiko. I have a Kinetic watch at the moment. Nice and simple, and no need for batteries. Some people find them slightly heavy, though (I don't notice it). It's very hard to recommend something specific because personal taste is what really counts here.
My fiancé bought me a Tag Heur Aqua racer as an engagement present and i love it! My knowledge of premium watches ends there though.
I have a Bulova that has a good deal of weight behind it but the watch is outstanding. Looks sharp as well.
Seiko Cheesecake. I've had a titanium for a good 3 years now and its been awsome. REALLY light, understated look all round excellent.
My dad bought me a Seiko Kinetic, and the movement went after 2 years - £100+ to replace, not covered by warranty. Basterds
+1 for seiko here, mam and dad got me one of their gts titanium range for my 21st. Beautiful watch, accurate as hell, still needs the links removed for a proper fit, I only ever use it for special occasions.
There's a Baume et Mercier Classima very similar to the Longines linked, with a black face. I'm a bit partial to Baume er Mercier, a Capeland S Chronograph is the gem of my collection. (until I finally pick up the Rolex Milgauss Green I've been lusting after) What's the budget?
up to £1500. are you talking about this: http://www.baume-et-mercier.com/collection/en/Classima-Executives/Contemporary-8590 ? that's quite nice, but the diameter's a bit wider and the strap looks a little too tan. I'd have to try it. Know any stockists in London?
ooooh i saw that one. But the one i linked to i found for £800 and has a date! I'll have to make a trip to a decent watch place - ernest jones just isn't cutting it.
If you're in London then this place looks pretty good. I've been looking for a Wenger dealer in the UK (without much success I must add). From around here London is the most convenient!
I like Seiko too - I have two Kinetics. One's mechanical only, the other is electromechanical (I.e. movement stores charge in the battery) I prefer the Electromechanical one as I don't have to set the time again if I forget to put it on in the morning. Had the mechanical one for ~4yrs, and the EM for 6-7. Agree with Smilodon though, all about personal taste.
Goldsmiths are a lot better in store (most stores anyway) than they are online. Watches of Switzerland have a very good range, but a lot of it will be very much out of budget. Upscale independent jewellers are always a good bet too.
Take a look at this months FHM, theres a watch section in the mag. I would lover either a Seamaster GMT or a Monaco then again my trendy side of me wants a G-shock.
