Agree completely, it's one reason I handle my ipod classic like it's made of golddust. I long for dismantleable hardware.

Speaking of, ARE there any phones or mp3 players these days that you can easily take apart - that even have screws? I mean, I've heard there are ways into an ipod, but it's witchcraft if you ask me. Damn thing just has one hairline seam and that's it.

edit - lol'd at the link. Tragic.

Almost every modern gadget can be taken easily apart. And put easily together again. It's getting all the cracked plastic and glass to fit that can be a problem ;)

I dropped my iphone 3GS off a jetty into the local broad.

Drove home and got a wetsuit...jumped in (bout 6' deep) and felt around with my feet until I found it in the mud at the bottom.

2 days in the airing cupboard - still works fine!

I'm fairly certain Blackberry phones don't require tea to malfunction though. They seem to do it quite happily of their own accord...

There is nothing that can't be dismantled. And if you saw an iPod actually dismantled you wouldn't think it's witchcraft, you'd just go "oh, that was easier than I thought!" :D

I've been repairing/restoring/refurbishing iPods and iPhones since the 5th generation video iPod with the colour screen. You just have to be really careful and know where to apply force and leverage and where to avoid. Also knowing exactly what's inside each device before you dismantle it makes a huge difference, which is why I usually leave it up to the good folks at iFixit to do a disassembly guide for new devices first, then I can go at it with half a clue what to expect rather than breaking the first one I work on :)

You, sir, are ever-increasingly a fountain of knowledge.

I'm so taking my 120GB classic apart. It's probably out of warranty anyway, right? :worried:
