i needed a new graphics card , so i got one for Xmas, my old one, wasnt even a graphics card, it was onboard thingy, my new graphics card plays games fine, except for one thing , when i go on my favourite online games ( lotr battle for middle earth, and command and conquer generals zero hour ) after a while, it just goes dark grey/black ( the screen ) and never comes back, i have to turn it off manually , which is anoying when you havent saved it, or are playing online :waah: any ideas whats the problem? might be the cooling system? because my old one was onboard?

did you use the drivers on the cd it came with? cos chances are they are well out of date, may not work but its worth a try, if you have a couple of fans in your comp and the stock cooling on the card then i wont be cooling probs, PSU might not have enough power perhaps? just a thought

sounds like either a power or a heat problem to me, but update your motherboard drivers too while you are at it :)

Depends what motherboard you use. Check your monitor standby settings too, turn them off.

:Shudders at this guys level of newbieness : :eyebrow:

    umm a few things

    a) power doesnt mean horsepower as in proccesor speed, it means that your power supply might not be sending enough voltage to your video card.

    B) to determine what motherboard you have the best way would be to open up your case and look for the brand and the model ( the two biggest logos most of the time in white and by the pci slots)

    C) i dont think its a heat problem because the card is relatively new

    D) if your gonna attempt to update the bios on your computer I STRONGLY recommend reading up on it and learning about what you have to do and what can go wrong. Use the search function here and see what you can find.

Get this program: AIDA32 and it will tell you everything you need to know, including, most of the time, where to get drivers for your components.

    There are 2 ways:
    1. Go into bios (either F1-12 (one of them) or del. BTW it should say on your POST screen). If your bios supprts overclocking then change some timings, voltage, etc... But READ up on it otherewise you'll fry your ram, your cpu and maybe your mobo if you're not careful.
This should help with OC'ing and with other things

    2. Go to your nearest computer store and buy a faster CPU

i really wouldn't try overclocking when you dont even know what motherboard you are using, i suggest you spend some time reading the forums, and having a LOOK in you bios to see what you can change, dont change anything till your sure what it does or you could end up with bigger problems than games crashing

Please tell me this is a "brand name" PC. (ie: Dell, HP, PB etc...)

If so then call them. if not then take it to a computer shop.

DO NOT try and fix it yourself if you are unfamiliar with basic computer architecture and Driver systems.

If it's a dell you couldn't OC even if you wanted to. A guy in my class just got a new (dell) PC, he payed €980 for a PC that doesn't even touch my €450 PC. :D :p Nevermind...

Point of the story: read up on PCs when you buy a new one. If you wanna change something, do something, add something, read up! Even when asking for help some knowledge of what you're talking about is really useful.

OCing is dangerous and furthermore, you'll void most warranties unless you have corsair RAM and a very nice CPU vendor. If you don't know how to overclock or only have a vague idea of what it is, don't try, because you will certainly fry it for lack of an idea of how far to push it. To quote my father, "A little knowledge is a very dangerous thing". Be careful with your stuff!!
