    Thanks :)

An surprisingly no Carbon its self is quite compliant as in itll absorb shock etc I had an alloy one before an this despite being a racier geometry is as easy if not easier on long rides in terms of comfort.

I have a carbon fibre Boardman frame & forks, and it is compliant. I'm still not quite used to not having suspension though, so it's a little... bumpy as far as I'm concerned.

I have a problem! I need to replace the big chainring on my bike (2016 Boardman Hybrid Comp), but I'm having the devil's own time trying to source a replacement. The current ring is an FSA 9-speed, 110mm BCD 50T (with the small ring being a 34T) and is branded "FSA 50/34T S-9 110 BCD" which seems quite self-explanatory :D It's a five-bolt arrangement fwiw.

The problem is that I cannot find such a part anywhere online to act as a like-for-like replacement. Any FSA 110mm BCD rings that I can find are N10-11 which I believe are 10/11 speed parts. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to drivetrains and don't want to buy a replacement cog that isn't compatible with the current setup, and don't want to have to replace any more parts than are strictly necessary. I need to replace the chain and cassette anyway, but finding these parts has been trivial.

Should I just go to my LBS and ask them if they can source a like-for-like replacement chainring?

I saw that, but was a bit confused because although the description says that it's compatible with 9 or 10 speed, the image shows 10/11. Further confusion when some of the Q&As say that this part is compatible with 9-speed and others say that it isn't!

I don't want to end up dropping £35 on a 10/11 speed ring that isn't going to work with my 9-speed setup... Am I worrying unduly?

Oh, and whilst I'm here: the chainrings I have just now are 50/34T and the cassette is 11-34T. I find that I'm not really using the small cog at the front very often, but could occasionally do with another gear at the top when going down hills. I can't quite get my head around how to go about achieving a slightly higher set of ratios - any suggestions? Ta, and sorry if this is a ridiculously stupid question - I'm normally okay with this sort of stuff but am having a properly "blond" day today :D

The best steel frames used to be built from manganese–molybdenum (MangMo) steel, such as Reynolds 531 and 753, building into a frame lighter, stronger, stiffer and livelier than CroMo. Steel has moved on a bit since I had a 531 frame built in the mid 80s: http://www.reynoldstechnology.biz/materials/steel/s-953/ Aluminium frames do tend to go soft as aluminium has little or no fatigue resistance.

I see the confusion on that ill look when I get home, easier to surf there, Re gearing, going up a cog size at the front would mean a new crankset to get a 52/3T big ring, your cassettes highest gear wont go any lower than 11T

Unfortunately those older tubes were killed off by the move from braising to welding by the larger frame manufacturers, as 531 and 753 do not like the high temperatures. Reynolds 753 has to be silver braised to keep the temperature even lower.

You are right about the cost, beyond my reach now. I bought my custom frame from Argos Racing Cycles in Bristol, one the best frame builders in England and handily close for me. In the mid '80's it cost me a little over £300. This link shows you the prices now: http://argoscycles.com/new-frames/reynolds/

Too bad the hills around here are so freaking pathetic. For my summer holiday I think I'll be heading somewhere where there are mountains and rental bikes.

Also I need some practice with the camera angle :D
