Why do you need to wait 7 weeks? I picked mine up at walmart for $170, frame seems solid had to swap out the skinny plastic petals for a spare set i had for my bmx bike. i couldn't stand the tiny little plastic ones, the forks scare me tho since im 270 pounds and there is warnings all over them about not jumping with them.. witch is something i enjoy doing. I'll be putting it threw a test tomorrow when i go on a ride. a few friends of mine, one of witch is x500 from the forums here, are planing a ride/camp before they leave for college.

I like the wooden basket >.>
I have a quick question, I have a sprocket/gear from a bmx bike if i was to take my crank of the front and used this instead (its same toothing as the middle one on the sprocket) would it work? or when it shifts to higher/lowerest gears on the rear would it pop of. my front derailer is worthless and i really only need the back gears, any one else ever done this? it'd be like a single speed hybrid i guess, much more durable to i would suspect.
This is the chain wheel in question.

Do you have BMX crank's to run it on as I'm not sure if the holes to bolt it to an MTB crank would match up. I run a BMX sprocket on my dirt jump bike but with BMX cranks, its set up 30-12 single speed and there is no problems.

If your just going to run that you may want to either keep your front mech on the bike to act as a chain guide or buy a chain guide as depending on the number of rear gears your running the chain will usually try and jump of the front in either top or bottom or usually both due to a bad chain line.

It's a 7 on the back, i have some spare crank arms too for it.
Another quick question while im here, the crank arms on my Schwinn are the hardest things ever to pull, i know i need a crank pull but is there any home remedy for popping the little buggers off? the ones on my DK pop off like butter, a course the crank cost half of what the Schwinn did but still should be similar concepts.

Alright, first things first, BMX rings will not mount on any other style of crank. None of the holes will line up, and they're not designed for it. Added to that, most of the chain-rings will be too wide for a standard, geared chain (though you may be able to get away with it given that you've got a seven speed setup). As well. the BB (thats Bottom Bracket - the bit between the cranks) will be of a different style to that which your BMX cranks use (it'll probably be 18ish tooth splined, rather than the square-taper that is most likely on your schwinn).

To sum it up: without the proper cranks, ring, and BB, you cannot run a BMX ring on the front. There really is no need for it unless you're doing crazy stuff and need a stupid-strong crankset. Even then, there are many, many better options in the MTB world that you could choose from (I'm particular to the hones for a general-purpose DJ/DH/street crank),

Towards the notion of a chain-guide up front, they're definitely useful, but not necessary. My giant is a 1x9 without a guide, and I've only thrown a chain once. But then again, due to your seven speed setup, you may not need a guide quite as much as those using a nine speed, as your chain is thicker, and therefore more forgiving.

Hammer + flat-headed screwdriver. Add heat if necessary, but usually you don't need it. Failing that, most bearing pullers will work in a pinch (though the proper crank-pullers are cheap and honestly the best option). The problem you're running into is actually the same mechanism that they utilize to stay in place: that of friction. Tighter the crank bolt is, the tighter the crank gets on the spindle, providing more friction, disallowing it from moving (therefore affecting the crank-bolt, threatening failure).

    Hope that helped.

To throw another idea at you, why not just shift the chain into the middle ring and forget about it? Even you can adjuxt the stop screws on the top of the front mech so that it won't move (when in the middle ring) then get rid of the shifter.

If i'm honest, I'd say that if you are thinking of doing what you mentioned above you have probably not bought the ideal bike but if that was the best within your budget forget I said that.

    @Malfoleo, whats your Giant?

Yea was the best in my budget, bought it to slowly upgrade every thing, including better frame. over time. I may just buy a new front derailer when i get my thumb shifters. thanks for the info guys im feeling pretty dumb founded with these mountain bikes, I'm use to the simple ol' BMX bikes.

Acid. Been drastically rebuilt since previous picture posted in this thread. Psylo XC U-turn fork, MT28 front (axiom hub), EX325 rear (laser disk hub), EA50 seatpost and bar, Funn stem, Juicy 3's (front only at the moment, but rear coming soon), XT derailleur and deore shifter, random silver cranks with Envy 32t ring and FSA rock-guard, Chromag mini seat, Rogue grips, Ignitor tires. She rides real nice now, and is a real eye-catcher at work (only one or two other people there have ever even seen one of these before).

Nice, sold a few in the shop a few year back, had one stolen off the wall too. I liked it all but the stubby front mech mount, went for an STP Zero myself :p

The front derailleur mount really throws it off, yeah, tough I still want the limited edition version of this frame (looks so sick).

On my list of frames to get: Acid limited edition, Pornking (in pink, obviously), SC jackal, Cove G-spot, Evil Imperial, Apocalypse (with Risse Racing Bigfoot, obviously), and any of the Brooklyn Machine Works frames.

I've come close to owning a few of them, but they either were too badly damaged, over-priced, or didn't have the cash (nearly bought a Le Toy 4 a couple weeks ago, but it sold too quickly)

Whats the LTD Acid? I've just got my STP and an 06 GT Zaskar. Thinking of selling my STP because once my achilles heals the small frame might not be the best ride. Really want something full sus like a Trek Remedy but i've no money at the moment. Though the plus of running a shop is I get what ever I want at trade.
