This might be a signal to the "elite" posters, like you consider yourself, that there really is a problem. I agree with NoahFuLing, jugde on what he posts, not how much. This kinda reminds me on a person that once surfaced here, he had over 10 000 posts on an other forum, and he bragged about it all the time (was in his sig). I don't know what happened to him, but I think he got a good whoopin' of the permaban hammer in less than a week, IIRC.

Everyone was a newbie once. We all have/had to learn a lot, but there is a distinct difference between 2 large groups of people. The ones that are willing to learn, and invest an effort in it, and the ones who want everything presented on a silver platter, and show no respect to other. I think this thread, although the title is a bit off, proves that once again. So Fev, sorry to say so, but your absolutely pointless post is a shame for a 1400-post forum member...

I suggest apprentice or something? ;) But no, seriously, I don't mind being called a n00b, or a newbie, because I know I am. It's just a phase we all need to get through. I hope the respected members on this forum judge me but what I type, not how much. I can show "respect" for someone who makes a brilliant post, even if his postcount is 1 (I think of the copy/paste work of MARYA, if she/he would have written his/her first post, instead of copying it, then I'd show respect, because it was brilliant).

    EDIT:
Or, yeah, what he said, even better ;) **Don't mean to be rude Herbicide, I really mean it**

Yeah - I think it's important to correct the title of this thread - at least in spirit...

Instead of noobs it should say Morons.

Educated computer savvy experienced hardware enthusiasts could join bit-tech and be welcome members with their first post. (Most are in fact.)

On the other hand some 1337 H4x0r could spam the forums for a few weeks and get a post count of several hundred and still be a moron.

Bit-tech has always welcomed new members, and I don't think we should do anything to change that.

However, when morons who are incapable of communicating with other people, I have no sympathy or desire to help. Ban them all (after 1 or 2 warnings first of course,) as far as I'm concerned.

That's pretty much what I am saying, DreamTheEndless. :thumb: Warnings should be given, and if they are ignored, then BAM! Hit 'em with a permaban.

Well, if people started to speak in English, as far as I know "n00b" and "newb" are not recognised English/British terms. Then there will not be any miscommunications.

While we're on the topic of definitions, please help out a dumb American (I know that's repetitive, but...)

What exactly is the definition of a Chav? That term hasn't made it over here yet.

Posted by me in another place, but it seems to apply to this thread.

"One point - we have a predominantly young membership. They're the ones who seem to be buying the cutting-edge hardware reviewed, modding their systems, indirectly paying the site bills.

A lot can't write well in an exam or CV when they're trying their best - they aren't going to do better in a forum post. Let's kill leet-speek, lack of paragraphing, total confusion by all means, but much as I support correct use of your/you're, where/were/we're, etc, I see plenty of bad examples penned by staff & mods. Spell checkers aren't infallible. Don't sweep the babies out with the new broom."

Asking questions that show your ignorance is not macho. It's a bloke hang-up, like our renowned reluctance to ask for road directions. A new member is often, albeit subconsciously, trying to create a 'cool' image so he's nervous and makes mistakes. Other members can ease him past that "first day at the new school" stage, and if the question has been answered before, a link to an old answer is a gentle reminder to use the frigging search next time he has a question.

Also, some Posting Guidelines, Advice for new members. Perhaps it should be in the IT curriculum.

See 'white trash' for a possibly equivalent term. Most of the details given fit chavs.

I always perceived chavs to be the equivalent of wannabe ganstahs. Those who wear "bling" and listen to rap and basically don't give a **** about anything other then how they're gonna make/steal the next dollar to buy/steal the latest and greatest rap cd out.

As to the topic... there's a guy creating new threads over in the console subforum.... I'd like to staple his hands to his face so he couldn't type any more. :miffed:

Thats the first explination I was given of them, over here they are known by other names. The two tend to be the same in a way I guess.

I dunno, maybe it's me, but I think I see a difference. Based on what I'm hearing, a Chav is defined by what they do whereas white trash is what you are. We have a lot of rednecks in trailers up here, which most people would consider to be white trash, and by and large they don't cause any problems. If I'm reading the context right, a person isn't born a chav, they do somthing obnoxious to deserve the title. Am I wrong?

Then they're just pathetic poor people. :sigh:

Features I thought common to both stereotypes, taken from the Wikipedia lists,

WT: # Unruly behavior in public, including drunkenness, swearing and brawling.
Chav: # is associated with crass, drunken behaviour and minor criminal activities. This includes unprovoked attacks on members of the public (see happy slapping), vandalism, verbal abuse, and drug abuse. This delinquency may be carried out under the influence of cheap alcohol, often after the pubs have closed.

WT: # Residing in rural, small-town, or working class environments. # Poorly kept property.
Chav: # lives on housing estates and other low-income neighbourhoods, often supported by state benefits such as incapacity benefit or the "dole" (unemployment benefit). (less rural - the Chav is essentially a creature of the suburbs and inner city high-rise)

WT: # Sexual promiscuity, teen pregnancy, illegitimate children, and incest.
Chav: # takes part in under-aged drinking and sex (and, consequently, is associated with teen pregnancy).

WT: # Driving an older model domestic pickup truck like an El Camino or sports coupe like the Camaro.
Chav: # owns a tastelessly modified car, usually with a basic original specification, but decorated in a gaudy style. The Vauxhall Nova is one of the many small hatchbacks associated with this stereotype.

WT: # Illiterate, or without the ability to speak standard English.
Chav: # pronounces English in a style that is seen to be unsophisticated and characterised by slack diction — for example, the pronunciation of "thing" as "fing".

    Hypocrite! Blasphemy! :hehe:

I agree though. I haven't used IM for quite a few years, but I always used real words and not that jibberish. Same reason I don't use txt messaging - lazy/phonetic messages are unreadable and it's cheaper to make a one-minute call than to send ten texts back and forth, not to mention faster and requiring much less thinking. That post was downright incoherant, regardless of the fact that it's 2am (...hmm... school tomorrow). That's about four grades below n00b in a chat room, not even to the level of alphanumeric phoenics ("0mg i h8 u!!1").

In any other situation, I'd pretty much call my post flaming, but this defines exception. And it's an attack on that type of posts, not specifically the author. Regardless, I think anything that is posted in that obviously went-out-of-your-way bad English should be punished by no less than a one-year ban from the Internet.

Let's just say I've had an easier time reading posts made by a member's cat walking on his keyboard. After setting Firefox to use Wingdings3 as the standard font.

I agree too. I find that IM is only useful when you can read it and understand it without having to translate too much. Otherwise, it becomes slower than talking, and thereby totally missing the point.
Seeing as I'm on a corporate plan, I get 1 minute calls free. :D 1 minute is a lot of time, by the way, as I've given full directions to my house, given homework answers, and left descriptive voicemails in under a minute.

:hehe: Amazing. My dad's now looking at me like I'm insane because I'm laughing hysterically. And wiping cereal off my desk.

noahfuling.........you are really quite a funny chap, and at the age of 14 surely you cant seriously be pedantic about the english language

i mean no offence... but really you are going to the extreme

your letting somebody's poor grammar get to you, and the fact that some lazy girl and other idiots are giving you "A combo of severe OCD, perfectionism, and intellectual level differences" is pretty sad.

But,I understand where your coming from. A lazy girl surrounded by dicitionaries, can't bring herself to find the word is pretty annoying, but see it from her perspective...it's easier to ask a live dictionary (i.e you)...bringing me on to my other point

The person who wrote horrificly bad in your link may have done that for the reason that it's much quicker

have you talked to your friends on msn...do you spend hours writing perfect english...deleted incorrect fullstops, incorrect letters....................most people don't

Also...vist england some time, and listen to people speak.

So many people miss out letters from words, and are gramtically incorrect, please come over here and rant at them

Also do you rant at your teachers/friends for missing out fullstops or mis-spelling a word...because if you do...you won't have many friends, and if you don't why are you ranting at some random guy?

    P.S

i tried to write as best as i could.... :p

Only for the writer, it takes longer for the reader to process the words. So its not quicker, its just putting the burden over to the reader, instead of shouldering it yourself(which one should always do when writing). People should be taking time to write, because if you take time, and write as clearly as possible, others can read what you say without a lot of effort.

Correct English should always be encouraged, and this textspeak crap should always be shouted at, unless possibly, its actually in a text message, where at least theres the issue of cost to give as a reason for using shortened words.

    WTF does "Flighty" mean.

It's kind of insulting to read through a long post, bitching and whining about how "people are such n00bs today", especially when it's caused by "On a pedestal Syndrome". You don't just make up words and expect people to understand exactly what you mean. Get off your high horse. I don't think you are smarter than the people, i'd be inclined to think that you just believe you are, to fill a nice little void of insecurity that can come from a whole world of things - parents didn't wub you as a child, your first girlfriend turned into a lesbian, whatever... The point is, don't assume the whole world knows what you mean when you open your mouth, and random garbled speech comes out. Thanks.

If you're going to complain about made up words, maybe try checking that you're not just ignorant first? ;) - Seriously, you're on the internet, so I presume you've heard of google, use it. You can find the meaning of any word(or dictionary.com) before making a fool of yourself.
