I have just bought an unbranded USB webcam from the for sale forum. The guy I bought it from cant get the drivers to me at the moment. As I am itching to get my new hardware up and running I need to find some on the web. How can I do this if I dont know the manufacturer of the cam? Might there be a universal driver for this kind of thing?

    Thanks!
    Pete.

I had a quick look on google but no joy, so you need to get some clues. Obviously there are no stickers on it stating model number or whatever, so when you plug it in, what does windows tell you? Can you get it to search the windows cd to try to find drivers? It may then at least say no drivers found for ...... webcam. If not, you will need to look at the chipset, bit tricky though as it will be inside the cam and, of course, you risk naffin' it up when you stick your fingers in there. Depends how desperate you are though. If it were mine, It'd be apart by now!

If you're using XP try the inbuilt webcam software/drivers?

    Thanks guys

Im running 2K, and no drivers are found on the cd.

I dont mind taking it apart.
What will I be looking for on the chipset?

There is a serial No on the bottom of the cam dont know if this wil help though.

    Cheers.

    Pete.

Quite honestly, I don't know! I've not done a web cam before, but take a look at the main circuit board, it must have one, and just pick out a couple of the main chips, usually the biggest ones, and have a look for manufacturer name.
An example would be on a modem, the largest chip would usually be intel, ambient, lucient or something. So try to get a model number and we'll go from there.

Try looking for an FCC ID number then use this search engine: FCC ID Lookup That should give you the manufacturer (if you're lucky).

I had a no-name scanner, and had lost the drivers, I managed to find out who really makes it... only problem was that I had no way of telling which model it was... so I couldn't replace the drivers. You might have more luck though.
