Hi all, normally i would be in the modding forums but i figured this might come in useful as i happen to have a 2k server simply for P2P, file serv and as the server itself. And as it is a quite sexy Dual Xeon i figured i might aswell make use of it a bit more. So basically i am asking for help with setting up a webserver on it. I have read that most people well alot of people use a linux box for thier webserver. I would use linux exept i have only really played about with it for VERY small amounts of time. Mostly mandrake basically installing then giving up and installing Windows on the pc to make a game server or summin.

So cutting a VERY long story short. Does anyone know a good tutorial or can give me a crash course on webserver/ftp etc... from a 2k server. Thanks very much

    Ben

Thanks very much for your help man. But i now have an other problem your ineffable wisdom may be able to help me with. I followd the tut and its great. i also found the easy way of settin up ftp sites on a 2k server without apache and the like. So its all set up and working lovely from local computers on my 10.0.0.# network but from the big wide outside world i cant get through via my ip which is like 88. summin at the moment. I have all the lovely Network bridge and stuff on my ADSL router but havnt the slightest clue what to do to let stuff going to 10.0.0.# addresses straight through or whatever. Thanks for any help.

Ok my lovely l33t network (i had to use l33t cas iv never used any of those silly things so thats my first. GO ME) right well..... i have my ADSL router taking the phoneline from the outside world. The router is 10.0.0.2 then after that it goes
    1) Home pc downstairs
    2)My bros pc upstairs
    3) Cable for my mums laptop wen she needs it at home and
    4) upstairs to my router that goes to my 2 pcs "ben1" and "ben2" downstairs to the garage to my servers
    "shorty"(win2k) "buzz"(games server Q3a and Halflife)

Shorty is the domain controller, domain being hampton.local so its ben1.hampton.local etc....... erm that have assigned ip addresses no dhcp cas its too confusin for me cas i never know the ips that way. so shorty the server is 10.0.0.1. the router is 10.0.0.2. so what i need to have happen is ANYthing coming from outside my domain on the web to go straight through the router to shorty. i dont know how this is done because im stupid. Proxy??? i dunno wot it dus so im just sayin it incase thats a method. So i just need anything headding to my web ip 81.#.#.# to be able to go straight through to 10.0.0.1 in the local network. I was playin with the router abit before and foind allsorts of gubbins. but nothing i can figure out how it works. I hope someone can give me an insight into this because it would be a brilliant help. thanks

there should be an option on the router configuration deal

that says either dmz, or port forwarding try playing around with those and see if it'll work

you just have to set it so you just plug in the IP (10.0.0.1) and try it from the outside

found DMZ and set the DMZ host ip straight to 10.0.0.1 but as soon as i try ftping to the outside ip address i still just hit the router. i can remotly admin the router but cant get through to the local ip. ARRRGH erm.... its got DHCP relaying but i dont reckon thats it. Route Table (tried but im not sure) and Bridge filtering??? im still quite lost. :waah: any ideas?

you need to forward port 80 & 21 from your ADSL router to whatever the machine's IP is.

you'll find this in your router config

    80 being your web
    21 being your FTP

Also remember to have your IP static for your machine

thanks for all your help guys, i kinda had a bleaque idea that was what i needed to do in the begining i just have no clue where abouts in my routers oh so friendly web interface it is. plus the whole restart thing to save settings is begining to get annoyingin, chuckin me of the net everytine i need to change a setting. any ideas what it will be under????Status

    WAN
    LAN
    NAT
    Virtual Server
    Bridge Filtering
    DNS
    Save Settings
    Admin Privilege
    WAN Status
    ATM Status
    PPP Status
    TCP Status
    Route Table
    Learned MAC Table
    ADSL Configuration
    RIP Configuration
    Misc Configuration

    he he......

Edit: it hink i might have it! Virtual server. Public Port, Private Port and Host ip address. Ok Pubic port im guessin thats when someone is ftping me and that have my global ip:the port no. private port, guessin thats inside my network the port on my server and the host being the ip of the server. i think i have tried this 1 but so when it doesnt work i will be back to bitch some more.

a nicely cheap eTec / conexant router from maplin. £90

    www.conexant.com

what settings do you reckon i need to DISable for it to get through because its going on about not being available or allowd but on my server its all fine cas i can do it local which is the same. Also one of the ports i have changed appears to have messed up my little brothers tibia game. i don't know what port that runs on but i think i have messed it up nicely. erm i could give someone remote admin to it for a look but i dont particually want to do that. cas you can admin it from http from anywhere. Also thats what ftping the ip normally gets you. it gives me the contents of the flash mem on the router.

    2JE447323 -- Serial No.

No model number to speak of, im guessin that it is the ethasl bit, but i dunno. its a pretty generic lookin router so dont expect much help from thier site. Thanks very m8uch for ur help btw

I thaught i had it with Virtual Server because that was all ports etc... but it doesnt appear to have sorted anything atall. bit of a bummer. Erm... Ill give ip forwadin a go and mess with virtual server some more because i thinkthat still holds the key. When i am tryin to access it am i right in thinkin i just have my ip then :21 for ftp and :80 for http from global addresses???? Oh well a few more router reboots.

If you have apache all setup right and your FTP server setup

you should just have to punch in the ip and the Browswer or FTP client will go through the proper ports
