So it turns out I am a complete idiot. Nothing new there however I have a requirement for an internet, Just one. What is the process for buying a domain name, host etc... without being scared shitless about bleepbloops and whizbangs, anyone? Also are web developers (even your friends) regularly iffy in terms of getting you their details so you can pay them to do this for you instead of having to wait a few weeks?
Registering a domain name is quite easy. Go to either 123-reg.co.uk or go-daddy.com and follow the instructions. The application is as fast as you can fill out the forms and complete domain registration is normally done within 24 hours.
I've used/use Fasthosts http://www.fasthosts.co.uk and the process is straight forward. Chose a name, register the domain, pick a hosting package, and start creating.
Uni's "not so well informed or detailed" guide to a website: - Register a domain name. I use UKReg.com for all of my currently owned domains. - Get a web host. At the moment, I have a couple of hosts, one is private (local company) and one is fasthosts, which is supplied through my domain provider, UKReg.com - At this point you can either pay someone lots of money to design you a site and wait anything from 2 months to 2 years to have it online - if you go down this route, you need to give the web dev your UKReg details so they can change the nameservers of your domain to the correct ones and access your web server/host control panel to create SQL databases, ftp accounts to allow them to upload your website to the server etc etc. - If you go down the route of doing it yourself, you'll need to learn how to do all the stuff in the ^above^ point yourself. It's not entirely complicated, but after a few years of doing bits and pieces with my own and a few other sites, I'm still learning. At some point this year, I'm handing what my previous web designer and myself got done to another (hopefully more reliable) experienced person and letting them finish it. I know what I'm good at and what I'm not, and web development falls under the latter. That, and I have absolutely no time for it whatsoever.
ew ew ew! Worst customer support ever, almost impossible to cancel and one of the worst control panels I have seen, bar godaddy! For domains, 123-reg all the way! For hosting, it depends on what you are looking for. Inmotion offer decent packages with cpanel. www.webhosting.uk.com is good as well
It's pretty easy and straight forward so fear not! The answer really depends what you want it for. Some companies do packages that roll web hosting, domain registration and have some kind of 'site builder' included into one package with instructions. If you were to want the above I would recommend One.com, and last time I checked it was only £10 for the year. For a complete novice, this is probably one of the best ways. If you wanted to do it as cheap as possible, buy your domain from 123-reg.co.uk (can be had for under £5 I believe) and then host it on 000webhost.com which is absolutely free. You'd then of course, need something to put in it. There is always Wordpress, which I believe is also free and gives you some themes and ways to build content. But I would only really recommend this for a personal website, not if you were to be starting a company website of sorts. 1) Get a domain (or package that also includes #2) 2) Get some hosting 3) Link your domain with hosting (can be ignored if you have bought a package) 4) Get some content for it 5) Welcome to the internet It all can be up and running in a matter of hours, but can be over a day if you are using seperate hosting and domain as you will need to wait for them to link using A records (you just fill in some details to do this). Hope that helps...
Domain.com - Been with them for a few years, AMAZING customer service.. and tcohost.com for .uk domains...
Ive been publishing websites for years and have used hundreds of web hosts and domain registras as well as services like cloudflare to improve availability, security and speed. By far the best well rounded and value for money registrar is namecheap.com who regulary offer free whois protection and cheap ssl certificates for commercial security. hosting wise i would try stick to mediatemple.com or linode for more advanced users. these services off the best scalability. I've been a hostgator fan but I'm also planning on transferring to another host as I get some problems with hostgator's support lately high risk merchant account. I guess namecheap could be a good option.
Hostgator is over sold and over price hosting thats grown fast but not scaled well. Find it happens alot, but the big cheeses never learn from past mistakes. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Its ok, I have paid someone to do this for me, and just wanted to research the mechanisms behind it and whatnot.
