Yea then it sounds like some of the parts are just a bit odd, so I would see if they are still under warranty and get some replacements.

ok so here my method of spreading as5.... you put a small size blob (about the size of 1/2 bb) and you spread it out from the center out, everything should be the same tone no light and dark zone, and at the end I clean the object I'm using to spread it out, and pass it again......but before even thinking of applying I clean the heatsink and the cpu twice with alcohol 98º... first to clean all the residue and the to make sure no grease from my finger or any other contamination got on it.... once you applied it and set the heatsink, remove it and you should be able read the engraving in the cpu .... my 2 cents

edit: check the temps in the bios......... run the pc for like 20 minutes and then restar and go to the bios to get the idle temp +-

there could be a problem of the AS5 not having enough time to 'go off', i am really surprised that you are overclocking when your system is clearly unstable.

best bet, is to reset the bios, leave all volts and clock speeds as standard, DONT MONKEY AROUND!

if you need the bios to change boot orders then do so.

Then if in windows you get average temps for your chip at stock speeds, i.e 30 degree's or so. then hardware is fine.

If not then there is an under lieing issue which we can then go from

Applying Arctic Silver 5 is a very tedious and takes a lot of patience. When I apply it first both the die and cpu cooler bottom are cleaned off. Take six Q-tips; soaking each end in 91% rubbing alcohol, and scrub the surfaces until they have a mirror shine.

Take a clean lint-less lens cleaning cloth, place it on a grounded metal object and polish the surfaces to remove all trace residue. Place a small pea sized glob of Arctic silver 5 on the CPU and scrape it flat with a razer blade. It should appear to be a translucent silver color evenly spread over the CPU.

Line up the cpu cooler and put it in place with a single motion. Never lift the cooler to check the footprint as it lets in air. After tightening the cooler in place run the computer idle for two hours before running any demanding programs.

Thanks for the replies guys, though I'd appreciate it if you'd read the thread in it's entirety. I've re-applied artic a great deal of times now, and there's been no difference no matter how I put it.

I think the CPU took a hit, going to call Intel on Monday I spose

I'll just tell em their CPU blows and that it's overheating like crazy and it's the 5th one I've had and it's a disgrace that I had to pay 180$ for something that can't even stay under 50 degrees

It's quite normal for Core2s to be in the 50s; especially with "meh" cooling like that...

But it wasn't always at this temperature, which is why I'm rather annoyed with it and going to tell Intel off. It's running as hot as my P4!

All you guys saying to use a blob of AS a half or a third of the size of a ball bearing need a better comparison. Ball bearings come in a large range of sizes.
