Not sure if this would be better suited to the linux forum or not, mods feel free to move it. Not sure wether my problems lies in the hardware or software.

I've got a brand new notebook drive that sporadically starts making weird noises and I'm not sure what to make of it.

A little background. I decided to use my old Dell Latitude CPTv with Debian for my version1 Carpc. So I replace the drive with a Hitachi JK20 automotive ldrive. It takes a lot more power than the previous drive (1000ma vs 500ma) so I was concerned it might be an issue. I load up debian on it (without too much hassle) and things seemed ok. Then I noticed it.

It seems to randomly make a lot of noise. Almost like a fan that's on it's way out. When this starts is fairly random and doesn't seem to correlate to anything the system is doing or wether it's on battery or AC. It might start within a minute, might be an hour. The drive still works mind you and the system doesn't seem to slow or show any ill effects.

I thought it might be a heat issue so I tried shutting down and immediately restarting, figuring if it was indeed heat, it should go right back to doing it. It doesn't.

I'm not too up on notebook technology. Could this be some sort of problem with power management? Anyone else have a similar experience

I suppose I could remove the drive and install Windows to rule out the OS. Though I'd like to avoid the hassle of reinstalling if possible.

    Thanks,
    -Lee
