i have this weird problem where under linux i cant load web pages or sign into msn or download e-mails with evoloution, but i can ping sites.
it only just started yesterday on my home network, last time i used my laptop at home(about a week ago) it was fine.

currently im at my dads and posting this from my linux install, so its not the laptop i assume, also i can get online fine with windows from my laptop.

i had a simmilar problem but it was just firefox and changing a setting in the about:config thing fixed it, but now it just always says connecting.

i can connect with the synaptic packet manager and download things fine though.

my isp at home is ntl, ive tried with a diffrent router also so its not that.

when i did a traceroute to google at home it did about 6 hops then got no responce, here at my dads it did 15 then got no responce from google, but with bit tech it did it in 19 hops.

i was looking at the ubuntu forums and there was a thing about altering firefox settings to make it load quicker and do 30 trys when you connect or omsthing but that didnt help, so anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

i just really hope it doesnt persist when im at uni.

From your post I'm guessing you're using Ubuntu. Linux = kernel; Ubuntu = distribution. Are you sure you haven't changed a thing? Updates or something? Compiled a new package?

I think you messed a config file somewhere, maybe due to an update. So check that out.

If that doesn't help, I think you have a firewall problem. Is the firewall in the router set up correctly? Do you have iptables running?

yeh im using ubuntu, when i get home i can run a livecd on my pc and see if i get the same problem on that.

how would i be able to check configs? as the only one ive altered is xorg for ati drivers.

i dont think the current router at mine has a firewall, there are versions of it with a firewall on and they have a symbol on the frount of the router with a button or somthing.
when i get back can try a direct connection, but the traceroute deffinatly got past my router and i could ping sites too.

Doubl check in the network connection config that "default gateway device" is set to the device you are using (it could be different, I'm currently using an older version). This has been a problem for me before, although it may not be your problem due to being able to ping sites.

ok i got it working, there was somthing up with the profiles i had setup for locations under networking.

basically it wouldnt let me edit the entrys after i had created one so when i thought i was re-entering the wep key it was just putting it back to one for a diffrent router, silly thing.

but yay it works now :p weird thing was it would connect to the router but the router wouldnt let me do certainthings i guess, as i could traceroute bit but couldnt load the page.

also is there a way to get grub to work on an exsisting install? on my pc i had windows and linux on there but i had to reinstall windows and now i cant boot into linux at all, but with using the livecd it says grub is installed. i assume it will be somthing simple like editing a file somewhere. any ideas?:p

ok the problem is back now, it worked once, after i got back from my dads and i tryed to use it again today and yet again not working. wont even work if i turn off the wep passkey this time.

it connects to the router still, and i jsut tryed having wep key off but having the mac address allowed and on my router mac address table thing my laptop is listed with no hostname or ip but with a mac address. its all setup for DHCP so surley it should give my laptop an ip?

i guess thats probably the problem but i dont know. i will try with my other router to see if it cant connect to that one properly ether but i think it will, as it did before when i tryed it out.

when i fixed it last time all i did was change my router to no pass and it could connect, so then i entered in all the details for the wepkey on my laptop and saved it as a new location and it all seemed fine as it was connected but now i donno how i actualy fixed it then as its now not working apart from traceroute and ping again, i can scan my routers open ports and whatnot so im quite stuck with my limited knowlage of linux and routing stuffs.

I have exactly the same problem. My symptoms are as follows:

    - I can ping any normal web address (e.g. google.com etc) and the IP is returned.
    - My router is assigning me an IP address
    - But I can only access web pages via their IP address APART from after some random period of time where ones I've accessed are eventually accessible via their name.
    - No program can seemingly access web sites via their name, only IP
    - I can also traceroute, I think succesfully.

I have a crappy old 10 mb network card, I thought this was maybe to do with it but sadly under XP everything works fine :-(

    Please help!
