Hmm, well I'm glad I don't live in a city - I doubt anyone around here would actually bother trying to crack the WEP code and access my network (hell, there's a bloke over the road who doesn't even bother with WiFi security!)

And I've never had any luck with WPA either; tried it once, couldn't get it to work, so switched to WEP.

Plus, my DS doesn't support WPA anyway...

I wonder what security they use on the WiFi enabled trains? I've got a 4 hour train journey on friday, and wouldn't mind doing a bit of free surfing on the way...wink wink

well its been useless for a while

wpa has its weaknesses as well

radiator the bloke over the road might be running security inside the network like i do here :)

a vpn setup is much better though may not be practical for a "normal" home network

WEP has been relatively easy to crack a long time. Certainly if there's some activity on a network... WPA is a lot more secure, and I haven't got any knowing of a succesfull crack on a WPA network, without pre-knowledge that is. But, nothing is 100% secure. If you are one of the security freaks, go WPA with a Authentification server and stuff...

I've always used WPA with a pre shared key, i'm hoping this is reasonably secure although i don't know a huge amount about these things. Around here theres no shortage of totally unsecure wifi, infact all over the country i've had no problems getting online just by parking up in a street with a few houses and connecting to the nearest open network. Who needs Cloud or OpenZone or whatever with all this free internet!

    What kinda security you using?

WPA is about as simple and secure as it gets, assuming all your stuff supports it.
The only real weaknesses it has is that it's susceptable to brute-force attack but since you can use up to 63 chars (IIRC) in the password, brute-forcing should take a very long time if you use a decent password.

I certainly think, for home networks its the way forward since who's going to bother trying to crack it when they can use someone's network that has no security?

Also, on this subject, MAC address filtering and SSID hiding are useless as security measures.

bah, my network has a older first gen centrino in it (with only B support not G!), hence I'm kinda stuck with WEP... ¬_¬ fortunately there is not a single person round my area with a network - either thy're all leeeching off me (unlikely, I check my router options from time to time) or they cant be assed getting wireless. Anyways, if anyone knows how to get WPA/2 on the older centrino let me kno, cheers.

    huh? :D

dragontail, you just need to have XP with SP2 to get WPA going on an older centrino AFAIK. :)

    archie wpa + seperate network
and a linux box that hands out dhcp address
it also blocks all connections except for an ip that isnt in the dhcp range
and then allows a vpn into my network :)

but its easy to spoof MAC addresses...

when i was living in a house in reading, all the networks round us were insecure, and all but one had the default password on their routers...

Yeah, its easy but its the hardest out of the alternative methods of security.

I never understood the big deal. Sure, someone can break into your network with a little time and effort, but what the hell is the point on a home network? What are they gonna do? Listen to my music without without permission? :p

WPA with TKIP Preshared keys does it for me, with a sprinkling of MAC address lists as well.

Except it's not. To spoof a MAC address it really really easy. So it basicly offers next to no security....

My personal home network is protected by a 63 character long passcode randomly generated and uses WPA. I have been considering using vpn as well just because I can...
