For my new PC at uni I need some good speakers. Because I can live without surround sound in my way too small room, I decided I'd buy 2.1 speakers. The PC itself will be very stylish. Dual L1720B TFT-screens (like M_D_K has, I stole his idea ), a shuttle, nice keyboard/mouse, ... So having fittingly stylish speakers would be great as well. After a look around, I discovered the Logitech Z-2200, a 2.1 set THX-certified with 200 watt RMS, costing €114. Then the Creative I-Trigue set caught my eye with it's slick design. Not THX-certified, only 9 watt per satellite and, worst of all, _Creative_. These cost €100, but they're soooooo lovely. So, what to buy? Or does anyone has any other recomendations? And I don't want to hear "seperate amplifier and two bookshelf speakers" 'cause I don't have the money for that, €114 euro is over my budget already...
i would take the logitechs over the creative's! for small speakers they actually sound allright...well if my logitech speakers are anything to go by...
If there's still a set of Sirocco Spirit on sale in the FS/FT forum, then buy them. They really are great, I own a pair, and don't for a second regret spending £140 on them. As far as PC speakers go, they are still the best.
There's a pair on sale of £80 in the forums now. That's a bit too expensive, although I could get over that. But they're not stylish . I'm gonna look into it.
this is how big my room was but i managed 5.1 in their. just involved moving the bed and desk around so the bed was across the window and the desk was on the wall opossite the window. so rear speakers where behind the bed in the window sill and front where on the desk. sub under the bed
But I've never heard surround sound, so I don't know what I'm missing. And while I do play games and watch movies, I also listen to music a lot. So I dunno, I think I should spend the extra money on decent 2.1 instead of on not-so decent 5.1
Go with those Logitechs, in a recent Maximum PC review, they loved it. They said the only flaw with it was, that its not a 5.1 system!
Definately spend the cash on a 2.1 system, there's no point in spending it on a sub-standard set of 5.1s
So 2.1 it is, and like if the gods were watching over me, logitech just released some new speaker systems, one of which is identical to the Z-2200, only with a better design! It's like everything I need! http://pcau.com/l3/LOG3455.php Hopefully that's not the real price yet I could always make my own, would be a nice addition to this forum, a project to build your own speakers. Not been done before on here, I think?
Arrr, matey, good news, the cheapest I can find the new Z-2300 for is 120 euro, shipping not included (which is probably gonna take 10 to 20 euro). These are the winners then. They are sexy (still not as sexy as the creatives though), and sound good . Anyway, I've heard the Logitech's have too much bass, is that true?
Yeah, I could do that, but the person living under me would probably have a problem with that. True though, about the better more than less.
The logi's do have nice bass. But its still not anywhere near the power of my Twin Hyperdrive Subwoofers
Ive got a set of logitech 320's and there is too much bass, even on the minimum setting and its not really about volume of bass its just that it overwhelms the speakers, I could pair my mordaunt short 309 sub with the sats and get a better balanced sound and thats a £220 12" coned sub. but id imagine the Z-2200's would be better blanced as they use a different style of sub and whilst THX certification doesnt mean alot, I doubt theyd get the certification if they submitted something with a similar tonal balance to the 320s.
THX certification on these things means they just have a really really narrow "beam" of sound. and that kinda sucks for stereo speakers. THX compliant speakers are highly directional - it's what makes em great for surround, but not stereo.
Oh just great, making me doubt even more on the verge of purchase. So what you're saying is I better don't buy a THX certified 2.1 set?
I wouldnt worry about it relix im not even sure that is correct. THX is more about dynamic range and tonal reproduction than anything else the directionality of a sound is mostly defined by its frequency. In this price bracket a THX certification equates to a "not complete crap" certification. They may still not sound as good as speakers without THX certification, it doesnt garentee that their going to be good but it does imply their not total arse, that combined with some decent reviews suggests their a pretty good buy. Lets face it PC speakers are never going to be the win for music reproduction and having a THX certification slapped on these certainly isnt going to make them sound any worse than a pair without
sorry to resurrect an old thread, but i did some research on the THX specification thing, and my reference to a narrow "beam" turns out to be true, but vertically directional; not horizontally. regardless, it's unfounded, since "proper" THX stuff is always surround gear(which makes me wonder how the z-680s have THX certification - the surround satellites are not dipole!). see this link: http://www.orionstudios.com/D5/THX.htm in the end, i think the THX badge on this kind of kit is more of a "not crap" sign, as WILD9 said, but not a badge of class leadership. you can be assured you won't be disappointed.
Thats the certification criteria for home theatre equipment, they dont rate all equipment on the same scale, multimedia speakers have a seperate rating system, as do computer games which can also be THX certified. Its all a bit random really im sure soon they will have THX certified popcorn to improve your viewing experience
