Alright this is the first time actually writing something in the forums here, but ive been visiting quite frequently. anyways back to my problems . k well i seem to have aquired a dvd player that doesnt play dvds, so in that case ive taken the liberty of taking out the LCD screen in it and all the insides to perform more case mods, yes ill hook it up via VGA, and the article written about the PSone monitor is gonna work for mine, cause it looks the same on the inside, but my question lying in this... K everyone knows what when you take apart a DvD, CD player there is a nice set of wires, i like to call tapewires, and like everyone else you get annoyed by them cause they are only so long. well being impatient when removing LCD, i tore one of the flat wires in half, and was wondering if it was possible to actually put the wires back together, use what left of it and put it back in, and or replace the tapewire with actual wires?? http://members.aol.com/captvcr/cd200.jpg here is a pic of what i think is what im talking about ill try to take a pic of it. (its the silver wire i believe going across the center of the page)
the best route to go would to unsolder the thin plastic ribbon cable, and replace it with regular ribbon cable, which is easy enough to come across in old hard drive cables soldering that stuff yourself is either impossible, or next to impossible, or just really hard, depending what kind it is.
well the wire is much much thinner then regular IDE ribbons, its about less then a mm thick, if that helps anyone
That doesn't matter. All you need to do is repair the connections. You could use virtually any kind of wire, even individual strands. Probably the only caution would be not to go crazy with the length, they are probably some kind of digital signals and long cables can cause issues.
Alright thanx ill try to get rid of of the torn wire and put in some good wire, and try to clean it up, also if im just gonna use the LCD from it, would it be safe to say that i can get rid of the main "mother board", and just use the controller for the LCD, and then run the back light through a Molex?
k another question, since the LCD is coming out of a port. dvd player, if i have power going to the back light i wont be needing power going to the LCD itself shall I??
? I'd guess anything you are trying to use requires power. Lcd's require power in order to move the crystals, and there are likely associated driver parts that require power. Depends on what exactly you mean.
k well the lcd is hooked up to the main mobo of the dvd player, well the mobo is full of useless crap that i surely dont need but ill prolly end up putting the entire thing in my computer , but what i mean is this: if power comes in via 9V AC adapter, and the back light is hooked up through a series of components that to all of us seem useless if you can just use the 3 power wires, so im asking if i just have the LCD hooked up straight VGA, will it work or do i need the main part of the mobo, if you guys dont know its cool ill be experiments soon
k here is a pic of what the lcd looks like, i left out the main mobo cause thats not the nature of my question as of yet and the tapewire img talking about:
Ouch. You may be borked there. Before you go messing with that cable, theres something you should know: Most portable DVD player LCDs use a digital input. They will have a few digital lines for R, G, and B bits, along with timing bits. They are not anolog friendly. Since the format is DVD compressed digital media, theres no reason to use an analog LCD. Thats why they usually dont come with a TV input option. VGA is RGB analog signals. Not digital. You will need a special controller to inteface the VGA signal to the LCD, and not the one that was in the player to begin with.
ohhh maann. that LCD is history. that cable attaches the LCD line drivers of the glass substrate to that interface board. well its done :-\
well so far ive made a bid on a PSone screen on ebay it ends tomorrow around this time so hopefully ill get that, if i do then it shall be extremely soon that i start my modding. ill create another thread displaying what i shall be doing, and talk to a moderator about creating a log for it but i shall be asking help on what fans and other small things to use to increase air flow through my liquid cooler, and some lighting. anyways thanx alot guys i thought it was a gonner, but ill still be keeping it.
Here's something you can try: Make a clean cut perpendicular to the wires running in the ribbon where it tore. Now take a thin piece of plastic (Transparencies work fine) and cut it to size (you will note that the ribbon is reinforced similarly at the torn portion. Superglue the cut transparency to the edge you just made a cut on. Now, very very carefully, score off a small portion of the plastic covering the traces on the other side of the ribbon cable to reveal the flat wires underneath. Release the catch on the connector and replace the torn portion with the "repaired" cable and put the catch back in position.
