I'm looking to upgrade the system in my sig to play Battlefield 2. I'm also intending to do a complete upgrade later in future (say Christmas time/early next year) but right now I intend to get BF2 working on the system. My budget is about £170 and I'm looking for a middle of the range card rather than a high performance one. One important requirement is the need for 2 outputs (either 1x VGA 1x DVI or 2x DVI).

I've looked around at a couple 6600 GT cards but the only direct comparisons between them have been for the PCI-Express cards, and the ones that did have AGP counterparts didn't get decent reviews, so anyone know of any decent 6600 GT (or the ATi equivalent - I guess X800?) that use AGP?

You can get a GeForce 6800 for £159.99 from LowestOnWeb :)

How would that compare to a 6600GT 256MB etc? Value for money is my main consideration, no point spending more if it doesn't give much better performance in today's games.

It depends how necessary you feel 256MB of memory will be... in 12 months time, it'll be reasonably necessary... right now, I don't think so. :)

lowestonweb ain't if you get my drift, look around and you'll find stuff cheaper, personally I'd have a look for a decent ATI card, like maybe this one? (ok so it's £4 over budget before p&p, but...)

Hmm, that's a consideration. It's bad enough trying to figure out Nvidia's naming system let alone ATi and all the resellor's, so it's nigh on impossible to know which card is which and is it better than that model without reading through all the specifications.

A mate of mine suggested I upgrade the RAM as well since BF2 seems to struggle on his 512MB until he got another stick. So if I was to buy another 512MB stick (£30) that would bring a 6600 GT or thereabouts back into consideration as well.

God, I'm useless at making these kinds of decisions! :wallbash:

you will benefit from more system memory without doubt IMHO.

go with the nvidia 6800, its got newer hardware than the ati's.
(shader model 3.0 & hdr capabilities too)

Thanks for the replies. Any siggestions for a 6600 GT or the ATi equivalent since most results on Google tend to be about the PCIe versions?

If you can stand to buy from OCUK, they have a Leadtek 6800GT for £165inc VAT at the moment. Would beat anything else mentioned so far...

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Leadtek_SALE.html (about 2/3 way down: Leadtek WinFast GeForce 6800 GT 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail)

I saw this one too, but noticed that the core speed was lower than the 6600GT of other makes? I guess it makes up for it in other areas?

I've been so out the loop on cards its unreal and so confusing

Most of them seem to beat me old 9800pro hands down. With a new card and say another Gig of RAM and I'll be laughing :D

Spawneh, the linked card is a 6800 GT, not a 6600 GT ;)

surely thats even worse if a 6600gt has a higher clock speed than a 6800gt?

No, GPU's work on parallelism - a GeForce 6600 GT only has 8 pixel pipelines and can only write 4 pixels per clock. A GeForce 6800 GT has 16 pixel pipelines and can write 16 pixels per clock. Typically, the GeForce 6800 GT is about twice as fast as a GeForce 6600 GT.

I thought the 6600gt had 16 pipes if thats not the case the 6800gt would be a better option.

    6600GT - 8 physical pipes, 8 pipes unlocked
    6800LE - 16physical pipes, 8 pipes unlocked
    6800 - 16 physical pipes, 12 pipes unlocked
    6800GT - 16 physical pipes, 16 pipes unlocked

So yea, any 6800 card is going to be faster then a 6600 even if the clocks are lower (except for 6800LE and if you got a really lower clocked 12pipe card but they arn't available anyway afaik..:p)

the 6800 LE and 6800 Std are slightly different in their PCI-Express form there are only 12 physical pipelines inside the GPU.
