I need to get a CF card so I can try the 350D out, chances are im buying the camera so I was just wondering what the best size card would be.

I have a had look around and it looks like Raw is about 12mb and Jpeg is about 2mb, im probably wrong though :p

Anyways I've found some real cheap but fast cards on Ebay...

    OEM SAMSUNG - 150X 2GB: £19 inc post

    OEM SAMSUNG - 150X 4GB: £40 inc post

I want to be able to take around 200 shots minimum in the highest quality Raw setting (for long days out etc), going by this site the 2GB is enough for that.

stay the hell away from those cards. they'll be slow as hell and will probably fail after a week.

ebay is a hotbed of fake CF cards; it's easy to offoad them there. be EXTREMELY careful as to what you buy, and do your research on the fake cards so you know how to spot them!

i say get at least a 1gb sandisk ultra II. jpeg you gget over 400 frames in fine quality. RAW i get about 180. that's on a 30D, so your mileage may vary. i wouldn't go any lower than1gb (apart from the free 512MB one canon sent me), though.

Canon's website includes the specifications for all of their cameras. The page linked to here is the Digital Rebel XT (the 350D).

The third block in the specifications list contains the file sizes for each format. You can use that list to estimate the number of shots you can take on a given memory card.

Thanks for usful info (both of you), looks like the 2gb is perfect but it I think I will try and find some sealed retail packed branded stuff on Ebay, should better chances of it being good quality.

Look for a Sandisk Extreme III CF. Runs at 150x, and is super reliable. Those are the only cards I use in all of my Canon cameras. You can pick up 2gb for around £20 on eBay

The Jpeg (best quality, biggest size) can be as little as 2 and as much as 5MB each. The RAWs have less fluctuation and are between 7 and 8 MB each.

Even on eBay, the sealed retail stuff isn't reliable. I have seen an article showing that even cards that come in a proper packet aren't official. I'm not too bothered to be honest - a 2GB card for £20 is good whichever way you look at it. As long as it works, I'm happy. I have mostly unbranded/fake CF cards, and for the record, my slowest card is an official 256Mb Sandisk one that is real (Direct from canon as rebate). So don't worry too much about the fake cards.

2GB will give you around 230ish pictures in RAW. Be very careful when buying off eBay. I got a generic card with no problems, writes fairly fast, and has lasted for a few months now, but just watch out.

I personally would never eve contemplate buying flash memory from eBay... the prices look too good to be true and they usually are.

In some cases such as these, you really do get what you pay for.

As far as I know, the fastest card is the Sandisk Extreme III at 133x, so the claim that it's 150x seems shady off the bat. And the picture they provide is definitely not anything like any Samsung CF cards I've ever seen.

Not sure how it is with the CF cards, but I know that the fake Memory Stick cards may be ok at first, but the components used in their construction is much poorer and they are tend to fail fairly quick. Personally I wouldn't use fake cards for anything other than recreational purposes where it doesn't matter if the photos/data is lost.

I've got one of the Sandisk Ultra II 1GB cards, and demoed it in a 350D. Worked great, highly recommended. I found RAW to be around 9MB, 2MBish for jpeg (and it has an option to shoot both at once, so 11MB per shot). So, what, 110ish shots per gig? Depending on your shooting habits, that might be enough, and might not be (especially with the rapidfire mode, since you can shoot something like 2.5-3shots per second). I'd say probably go for 2GB if you can cough up the extra bit for it, but 1GB should be fine initially at least.

I think the most important thing to keep in mind with the "pro" cards is that it'll generally be a lot faster reading and writing to it. Both for taking the pics, and actually pulling them off the thing, which could take a painfully long time if you've got a slow card with the big size of RAW shots.

Sandisk Ultra II 2GB is $64 at Newegg (I paid $80ish for my 1GB probably about a year ago). $37 for the 1GB. I dunno how prices will translate over the pond, but flash is pretty cheap regardless.

I finally bought a memory card, I've ordered a SANDISK 2GB EXTREME III for £48.85 (inc vat & post) from www.emartbuy.co.uk. Best price I could find and they shipped it same day (should be here tomorrow).

Sorry to revive this thread but there might be other tight arse gits after a good CF card on the cheap :)

Good choice! I would stay clear of other brands..
Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III and 2GB.

Most say it's better to get two 2GB cards instead of one 4GB, in case one refuses to work.. Good luck with the card, I'm sure you will be happy! These cards are getting cheaper by the day, I really see no reason to get a weird brand or possible fake on ebay.

I buy memory cards from emartbuy. Highly recommended. Good service, fast and the best price I could find.

I know it's a little late, but for future reference I've had good experiences with my 4GB Transcend high speed CF card.

Write speed tests on my camera, E-500, put it at just behind the Extreme III in performance and when I got it, the 4GB card was cheaper than the 2GB Extreme III.

Best price vs performance in my view.

Card arrived today (ordered yesterday) all nicely packed, brillaint service IMO.

    I'll award them 5 Dremel's :dremel::dremel::dremel::dremel::dremel:

Need to get myself down to Jessops this weekend so I can try out the 350D, I'm not gonna buy it until it drops below £400 though, I've put off buying it long enough.

Fibre, are you sure these products are legitimate? Also have you been able to test the speed that the card is capable of?

Its just their prices are soo much lower than anywhere else I can find, and the website just seems a little dodgy.
