I noticed these strips are present along the edges of the g4 cube's main chassis and also on the power mac g5's enclosure, between the main C-shaped body and the cheesegrated panels. What are these used for? EMI shielding? can they tolerate 100-200degrees C? reason for asking is, I am sending a modded G5 case for some paint treatment and it requires high temp to cure it. thanks
They probably stop 2 metallic panels from touching and vibrating. What paint treatment are you doing? Powder coating ? It would be best strip all such extra stuff to ensure a good finish and re assemble it later.
yeah shld have just said powercoating.lol i was hesistant in doing that because, while diassembling would be tough, it's making sure only certain areas of the case gets painted. I am trying to powdercoat it only on the inside and not the outside, so the exterior C frame cannot be powdercoated all over the place.
They are for EMI shielding, they maintain electrical contact between the side panel and the main chassis. They also prevent the panels from rubbing due to vibration, I believe that two metallic surfaces that vibrate against each other can cause EMI too, something to do with the chance of capacitance as the panels move relative to each other. By putting an electrically conductive, flexible gasket between them they're always in contact electrically and there is no capacitance change. Underneath the metal (or metallised) surface is a foam core so they wont survive high temperatures, you might get away with 100c but I highly doubt they would survive 200c. Moriquendi
