Nearly all free AV's do much false alarms. Sorry but it's so true :(

You've gotta pay if you want quality.

I would be inclined to disagree mmvr, working on a service desk the ones people usually pay for (Norton, Symantec) are always the ones which cause the most issues.

AVG is the only one I've found to not destroy stuff. NOD32 I think also used to be good but I've not seem much about it these days.

Well, maybe I generalized a bit. Some free AV's are good of course, but every one my friends and I have ever tried have been bad. Eg. my friend changed from Avira Antivir (free) to NOD32 because he got mad about not being able to use any compiled AutoIt scripts and when every item in his System32 and Documents and Settings were classed as viruses.

So far he's been happy with NOD32. Also I've always used F-Secure and I'm pleased, though it's a heavy resource hog (how can a single program occasionally use 50% of my RAM???).

Yeah I agree with that, I work for tech helpdesk myself. I think I have used Norton removal tool about 500 times this past month. A funny thing I saw the other day, In Matt damons "Bourne Ultimatem", the character played by Clare Daimes switches on her laptop to hack into the CIA database or whatever and what do you see? Norton 360 flashing off her screen before she accesses a browser. Nothing strange about that I hear you say, unless you have norton installed and you realise booting a computer with that on is NO WAY that quick unless the laptop is an IBM supercomputer in disguise . . .

AVG has caused nothing but trouble in my experience, conflicts with games, corrupting files cause it thinks it's a virus. had a friend using avg, moved over to nod32, and it detected 2000 infections on his AVG "protected" machine.

using avast now... just booted from installing and removing avg... haven't touched any settings or anything yet... anything you'd recommend and where abouts do I do this in the control panel etc on avast...
also avira??? is this better than avast? is it worth trying now that avast's installed or should I just leave avast and carry on...
never really had virus problems with avg so it was just there if that makes sense... so how do I know it's doing its job really? I guess it just is right if I don't have hassle and windows screwing up?

Nono, no Avira. Can't recommend it at all. Just try this trick with Avira installed:

Download and install AutoIt. Google it to find it.
Now make a new .au3 file. Then write a script containing this:
    Code:
    send({ENTER})
Then save it. Then right click on it. Select Compile.

If you didn't get a virus alert, try scanning the file. Do you see why I don't recommend Avira? It gives an alarm of a harmless file that can send a keystroke.

Ok, I know that can be misused. You can create a script file which downloads viruses and trojans and runs them. Sure. But what about a knife? You can do much things with it, like cut bread and another stuff, but you can also kill people with it. It'd be completely stupid to ban the usage of knives just because theyre murdering devices.

Avira might not be the only AV this affects. That's a very general experiment determining if an AV is any good at all.

OK, I generalized a bit again. I just realized that not the average joe or grandma utilizes those "knives". For those people these "false alarmers" might be good enough...

However, Avira was good enough for my friend, until he started AutoIt scripting. And then he just had to change. Using a "proper" AV from the beginning is like future-proofing.

Anyway, these are just my opinions. Use whatever suits your needs. :thumb:

And, why do people that have problems with AV software always have Norton or similar on their computers? I think it's because Norton comes with like every OEM computer preinstalled. At least with every one I've seen. Those people who don't buy OEMs are usually more advanced computer users and don't call to helpdesks.

Just remember turn off the sounds in Avast! I nigh on messed myself the first time it updated the virus database. And the sirens that go off if it picks up a virus are a little unnecessary imho, really should learn to turn my speakers down at times.

I've been running Avast! for over a year now on pretty much stock settings with no issues and pretty much forget about it. i do always merge the two icons in the task bar (right lick one and it will give you the option) just to neaten things up on install.

+1 avast. has stopped dead a few attacks on my pc.

-1 for norton. it clogs up the pc, is slow and clumsy and does very little good. has totally missed a virus that avast has detected. tragic really.
