As stated in my other thread just bought a new kindle, looking to get a new book ideally the start of a series to read.

Some of my past reads and favorite books
    • Sword of truth series
    • Lord of the rings
    • Wheel of time
    • Harry potter
    • Commonwealth trilogy
    • Temporal void trilogy
    • Alot of warhammer books
    • Dan brown
    • Shadows of the Apt series
    • Age of 5 trilogy
    • Magicians guild trilogy and sequel and prequel
    • Song of Ice and Fire
    • Eoin Coulter stuff
    • Inheritance Cycle

Been playing a bit of shogun 2 recently so wouldn't mind something set in japan or something in the styles of jade empire? Or any post-apocalyptic books would be good :D

Any general recommendations would be brilliant?

    Edit:

Recomendations so far which I've not read yet
    • Culture Series
    • The Hyperion Cantos
    • Farseer Trilogy
    • Foundation Trilogy
    • Dresden files
    • Shogun
    • Belgariad
    • Way of the Shadows
    • Gap series
    • Peace & War
    • Altered Carbon

Based on my own choices (and the fact that i like some of the books you list) i'd say books by Robert Muchamore, Christopher Paolini and Eoin Colfer.

This guy is highly rated, hear his name a lot. For my part, I'd recommend the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb. Only fiction remotely like this I've read for years, everything else has been popular science, ethics and philosophy...

This a billion fold. Start from the beginning.

Thankfully he's just released a new one in the series which will be on my summer reading list. :D

Edit: The Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons as well (Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion. Endymion and The Rise of Endymion follow on, which I have still to read).

Oh forgot I've read game of thrones, the inheritance cycle from christopher paloni and some of eoin colfer's stuff already.

Culture series sounds good, looks quite long as well.

Gona make an addition to the first post with recomendations so far lol

Oh, definitely read Asimov's Foundation trilogy. Fantastic reading, it really is.

Actually its part of the Foundation series. 2 prequels were then written and Foundation's Edge and Foundation & Earth followed. clicky

The Foundation Trilogy still ranks as one of the best, if not the best, series I've ever read.

The Dresden Files is a good series by Jim Butcher, he has preview chapters of the first few chapters of each book on his website so you can see if you like his style.

I would also suggest The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks and the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson.

    Some of my personal favorites:

    Solaris, Stanislaw Lem (highly recommended)
    Foundation Trilogy, Isaac Asimov
    Dune, Frank Herbert
    Robot Dreams, Isaac Asimov
    The Quincunx, Charles Palliser
    Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card
    The Perfume, Patrick Süskind
The Discovery of Heaven, Harry Mulisch

Maybe I'll add more to the list later on, can't think of more right now...

Seconded. And his Codex Alera books, too.

Stephen Brust's Vlad Taltos series is good. (Human assassin/mob boss mingles with elves (...ish), gods, sorcerers and aliens)

Simon R Green is also worth looking at, for his Nightside, Secret Histories and Deathstalker series...es (which all overlap, at points).

First off, +1million to Iain M Banks, simply awesome and rep for even suggesting it. EVERY avid reader needs to read it.

Asimov another great suggestion, especially with the way the separate series' seem to somehow knit together (foundation and robots particularly, maybe its just me but they really feel tied together somehow)

Along fantasy lines (taking this from you reading Sword of Truth(dont like it personally but its well written), LotR etc.). The Belgariad series by David Eddings, utterly brilliant. Where LotR is ultimately about the world of middle-earth, The Belgariad is about its worlds people. One of those that you dont want to end. (to be honest everything except the new Dreamers series by him is fantastic)

Recently read Thge Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks and was very surprised. Its sharp, clever and has lovely twists and turns to keep you going.

Along sci-fi lines again i was recently introduced to The Gap Series by Stephen Donaldson (him who did the Thomas Covenant series') and its awesome. Harsh, gritty and dark, something i never expected after the fantasy of The Illearth War.

Sorry i ramble when it comes to books  Can't help it, i love literature more than PC's (holy crap, did i just actually say that :worried:)

    EDIT('s)

Skimmed past that, sorry Kov. Raymond E Feist is great, especially the Krondor stuff.

The missus just gave me an ear bashing for not suggesting (although some is high fantasy i'll admit) Anne McCaffrey, Shannara Series by Terry Brooks, Mission Earth decology by L.Ron. Hubbard(yes he's the scientology nutjob but that series is really good), Katherine Kerr, The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams, C.S.Lewis Narnia books simply because they are infinitely better than the movies could ever hope to be, Eon by Greg Bear (i effing loved that book!) His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman.

Yeah, she reads ALOT. You should see our book cases

+1! My favourite series by far.

The Commonwealth saga is also excellent, but I have a feeling you may have read that if you've read the Void trilogy.

Hamilton's older Greg Mandel stuff is pretty good and the standalone novel 'Fallen Dragon' is awesome.

Another suggestion; Joe Haldeman's Forever War, or get the Peace & War book which has three books in it.

    Whoever said Dune, +1.
