Right, basically near to where I live there is a cheap charity second hand shop which genrally does a lot of furniture in it, so whilst browsing for a bedside table(My uni room was looking quite empty) I came across this: Lord only knows what I was thinking but at the end of the day I picked it up(Just it weighs more than a baby elephant) for a very small price and is now sat in my room looking expectantly at me. I have been thinking for a little while about building my own NAS which was one of the first thing's I thought of when I saw it but I'd been thinking about small form factor machines not this! I also made the silly mistake of assuming that inside the case there would be a 4 bay hard drive but it doesn't have one, instead it has these which I assume(again a silly thing to do) is to hold 8 2.5" drives but not sure as wouldn't they just fall out? On the brightside though it did come with a FDD, CD drive and a working motherboard (KP6-BS(managed to find the manual somewhere online)) with two P3 650mhz processors as for connectors on the back So what do you guys think I should do with it, I'm defiently leaning towards a NAS/Home server but don't know whether to get rid of everything in it and start again with new hardware or generally ignore the flipping thing! Still glad I bought it though, just not sure what to do! Marc P.S its got room for a single 120mm fan at the front of the case, also sorry if the pics haven't worked properly but something funnys going with my net so I struggled with the uploading!
no wonder you struggled with the upload of the pictures, these are HUGE, please resize i would make a nas of it
I think a more appropriate question would be what CAN'T you do with this case? If you like I can draw up a few ideas in sketchup for you. Is the case 4u or 5u? Just a piece of advice, ditch the board, it only supports up to 66MHz RAM and you'll need to use IDE drives with it, flog it on Ebay for a few quid and get something with a bit more beef (as long as it has SATA slots on the board you should be alright, especially if you're actually using 2.5" hard drives), I assume it's E-ATX, so any ATX board should fit
dam it i've been beaten to it. as said above those clips are for the uber long expansion boards, i hear in five year ATI and Nvidia will be using them! ROFL! kidding Oh and for a rack mount that case is stupid small, not even worth modding, unless you mount a ITX board in there, and dumb all the HDD lian li style where the PCI slot are.
Evening all, Cheers for all your replies, esp to Burnout21 and JoHoschi, when I look at it, it's quite obvious there holders are for PCI card's when you know what they are! @Mr ME, cheers for pointing out the picture sizes, its all very me selecting what size I want the pictures to be re-sized to but it helps if I tick the box too when uploading! @bigSharn, cheers for the SU offer but I've came up with a few ideas in lectures today(who needs to learn about C and ADT's) which I'm currently working on in SU. And I'm definitely ditching the motherboard @mars-bar-man, what is it with people from Somerset and wanting to hit things, I was talking to my GF and Brother about it and they suggested hitting it with a hammer too! Right, I've decided that the I'm going turn it into a NAS and mod it to bits! However before I go, I've got a quick question basically last night I finished off by taking it completely to bits(as a side note never take apart a case on your bed then lose a few of the screws makes sleeping a complete nightmare!) and so now have this However when coming to take the holder/clippy things I realised that actually there were no screws holding them in so I'm assuming there glued in as I can't see any welds or what nots So my question is how do I get it out? Is there someway of manging to easily detach them, or is it a cut it off situation, or simply hit it or pull it until they come off? Cheers Marc
You know you want to hit them Looks like it'll just need some brute force, and a dremel, failing that... STOP! Hammer time!
They are spot welded in place. That's what the divots are on the full length card holders are. The Nvidia card in my G5 tower is a full length card. Freaking huge.
In that case I'd guess that the only solution involves a very quick spinning cutting disc and lots of sparks
