Ok i have an old skool 120mm Delta EHE High flow fan. I got it way back in 2003 for a head to head challenge to make a basic radio controlled hovercraft and this thing got me the win. I have never plugged it into my PC, i know some people do but its tooooo extreme for general desktop use IMO. I mean the thing is rated to draw 36 Watts of power. You shouldn't even use 95% of fan controllers with this thing it pulls so much juice. Its rated at 59Db in noise! all i know is that you do really have to shout over it. Oh and the nice 190CFM of airflow helps (that was the main reason i used it in my project) Now the sales pitch is over what can i do with it I've kept it all these years mainly because in all honesty its an awsom peice of kit, you can feel its a well made bit of kit when you hold it in your hands and it looks like it will cut a finger off if you get too close. I don't want to destroy it because i like it too much. But what do i do with it? Ideas? Stuart
Since I had no idea what it looked like I found this on youtube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11spw-uewHI Seems you could use it to make chainsaw/jet sound effects! It doesn't seem like anything I'd want in a PC (unless I was entering the Noisiest PC Around competition), but I could imagine using in the shop as a ventilation fan for a homemade paint spray booth, or something similar.
Put it in a case as an emergency cooler. You need a big switch on the front of your case labeled 'TURBO'. You could even have little strips of tape on the grill. OR- a little parachute. Or...one of those silk tubes shaped like a person they attach to blowers and put out in front of car dealerships!!!
Mini stump grinder? A freefall wind tunnel for your hamster?(or a hamster grinder) Mount it under your desk and use it to cool your nethers? Use it to push air through 4 or more stacked 120 X 1 radiators?
I really like this idea. It would be good if you're running high end games and you don't care about noise too much (ie you're wearing headphones or something). Or you could put a variable resistor in there and set it to a low current or something (like a fan controller I suppose, but just for that fan).
36 watts your looking at a reostat or PWM controller.. I have a high end air benching setup running two 370CFM 80 Watt delta's, have a look here: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=197519
Heres my idea: TURBOCHARGED COOLING! Basically what Cheaps said, but with inspiration taken from the automotive sports industry. Have it strapped to the top of your case, with tubing going into the front/side of your case, ready to surge 190CFM of cold air into your case if the temperatures get too high Something like:
Or label the switch 'PURGE' and use it to dust the system. Attach it to a footpedal rheostat, so you can 'rev' it. Imagine sitting at a LAN, giving the person next to you a challenging look, and making your computer go "VRooMMM!"
i can't think of anything more awesome than an RC hovercraft. do you have any pictures/video of that?
Attach it to the bottom of your case and turn it into a hover-case. ...a radio controlled hover-case.
