What idle and load CPU temps should I be looking for for a 920 at stock speed? I'm planning to OC the 920 to around 3.66 GHz (seems to offer best bang for buck power consumption-wise).
Thread hijack . I'm using a Titan Fenrir with an i7 920, idle I'm getting around 40C, after a few minutes of prime95 though I get cores 0 and 1 at around 75C and 2 and 3 at about 70. That seems a bit high to me, or is that just me being paranoid?
If it's at stock or even a mild overclock that's far too high. It should idle between 30-35 depending on your room temperature and reach about 60 under load.
reseat the heatsink - mine goes to 75 degrees underload at 4ghz. also, invest in some arctic silver, you will see a difference.
Already got both... it was initially 90 degrees out (newbie mistake), rotated it, now fan goes straight out of case (made no difference to temps though)... Use AS5... EDIT: Sorry, was slightly wrong about idle temps, they are 30, but loads are still 70+
I had/have the same problem, with exactly the same temps as you. I reseated and am currently getting 35/65 at stock. Am considering reseating again, to see if I can lower that. I reckon you should reseat.
I'll be using Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2 when it's delivered. I'm limited on choice because of the size of my case. BTW, this cooler comes with MX-2 thermal paste pre-applied. I've used AS5 in the past, is MX-2 better than AS5?
Earlydoors, did you use articlean (or another thermal paste remover) to clean off the paste you'd already applied when you reseated? I've got some heat problems myself so looking at a reseat. If you did, did you remove the cpu from the motherboard? Cheers
They're about the same, both are very good. The ACF7P isn't as good as the Fenrir so I'd expect them to be a little higher than those stated above, maybe 35-40 at idle and 60-70 under load. Either way, don't be expecting to get to 4GHz with it.
Hopefully I'll get to around 3.6 Ghz without the system crashing/blue-screening. It'll be interesting to see how far it can be pushed though.
