I don’t know why I’d never checked for this before, I just assumed that it would be something this car didn’t have fitted. If there was an option available from the factory then this car doesn’t have it. Doesn’t even have an MPG calculator.

    But…

Today I discovered that the driver seat in my car has a height adjustment. For the first time in nearly 6 months I’ve been driving it, I can get my legs under the steering wheel.

    It’s truly a revelation.

Hyperbole aside, I’ve been on the fence for a while about getting shot of it and getting something larger. Now I know I can fit in the driver’s seat properly, I’m far more inclined to keep it going as long as we can. Need to get that damn back bumper fixed though, it’s been hanging on with gaffer tape for years

Haha, I can relate to this so much. Last month, I discovered that the bases of the rear seats in our car lift up and fold out of the way, so that you can actually fold the backs of the seats flat rather than having them sit at about a 30 degree angle. How did I discover this amazing feature, you ask? I... read the manual. We've owned this car for nearly 14 years :D

    Ditto.

I was originally looking for ways I could modify the seats or seat rails to make them sit lower, and I stumbled across the manual online. I’ve got the actual physical manual, but no harm in scanning through it while I’m bored at work... Of course the manual explains all possible options, including electric adjustment, tilt adjustment, etc. No chance our car was going to have the fancier stuff, but I thought I should at least check for a height adjustment lever…

Not having to wrap my knees around the steering wheel and contort my feet into weird angles feels so lovely .

I also discovered that the steering wheel can be moved closer to (or further away from) the driver, as well as moving up and down. And I discovered that you can use the remote lock/unlock buttons to open and close the windows…!

And the lesson here, children, is that you really should RTFM!

RTFM is a sign of weakness. Real men toil on in ignorance. This is the way.

    Steam Link.
Found a 1GbE USB dongle that works with my TV. I initially tried a 2.5GbE dongle but unfortunately that didn't work. I kept it in case it ever does.
Now to finish the attic-come-office so I can have the PC plugged in via ethernet as well.

Yeah, my only possible line of defence here is that I also have the physical manual, which lives in the glovebox, and I have read it previously, but it covers absolutely every option possible and I assumed that the fold-flat rear seats must not apply to our (relatively spartan) model.

Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

RTFM, never, it's not nearly as rewarding as just pulling and pulling every knob and lever to see what they do, and Civic's have 'magic' seats is a game changer is carting stuff around.

Another week, another business trip. It's a bit tiring sometimes, but I'm thriving in my new role, against the odds and some people's expectations. Really, deeply satisfying stuff.

Next week, I'll be in Berlin at the industry's most important trade fair. Small team, C levels and management members, only the best at our company at what's needed to get **** done there. And I got one of my newest team members to be part of it, partially as reward for a great start with us, partially because he has potential to join the ranks of that little team of specialists.

Excited, nervous, worried, flabbergasted. At the event and its challenges ahead as well as the fact how fast my fortunes changed since last summer.

I have a clear strategy for the next four years. What I want to do, where I want to go, how I want to get there, what kind of exit is possible then, if needed/wanted. Didn't think I'd get there (so quickly), and it feels good.

Life is strange, but it can be a lot of fun. And it's even better when you have that special someone behind you, pushing and strengthening you all the way.

My wife is my special someone but, it's enough of a challenge for her, just keeping me going at all, what with my mental health problems and, poor memory, especially bad short-term memory which is very frustrating for both of us.

Don't know what I would do without her...

Removals booked. Ended up not taking the extra insurance as we're packing our stuff so won't be covered and house contents confirmed they cover anyway.

So from a company initially quoting about £2.7k we're getting it done for less than £1.5k

The only decision is the sixty quid each end insurance in case they damage the buildings.... They only cover seventy five quid.

One of those - don't take it out and something happens, do and nothing happens and you waste a hundred quid.

Then again some things will be going in to the rental via a conservatory....

Yeah, think we'll be suckers and take it.

    It's the conservatory that niggles.

Apparently the guy said to my OH that it's a 1 in 20 chance. I'm not sure if he was trying to make it sound like a rarity but a 5% chance sounds like they need retraining

Chuckle time after installing the remaining 1TB Crucial P3 I had laying around from my dead server build into the remaining PCI-E slot on my MB...

Full RAID0 volume in Windows purely for gaming..

Pointless speed test is pointless but I like seeing 5 digits for both numbers...

Also confirms I can load this Z790 board up with 4 x NVME on the board itself and utilise the 4x PCI-E Gen 4 slot at the same time. I kind of assumed it wouldn't like that at all.

Absolutely loving the new tablet. It's not without its niggles, true, but no device is perfect. The colour is a great addition, page turning is faster thanks to the new CPU (though refreshing is a bit slower, 'cos it has to do each colour separately), and the front light means I can actually read stuff at night without having to sit in a particular place and angle a lamp at the screen.

It's even big enough to read UK newspapers without zooming! Well, just about.

(Captured with the front light off, natural light only.)

    Closer crop:

    remarkaguardian-crop.jpg

Interestingly, The Times uses a slightly bigger font size than The Guardian and is easier to read as a result. There's a "contrast enhancement" mode (set to "automatic" by default, and I have no idea how it decides whether it's on or off) which makes the text bolder and easier to read... but it comes at the cost of making the pictures look crap.

However, it's absolutely fantastic for old magazine scans that are a bit on the paler side. I was reading a copy of Amiga Shopper from 1993 last night ('cos that's how I roll):

    miggymag.jpg

    (Front light on this time.)

Yeah, very happy with this. The only thing I might suggest: page refresh takes about a second, which is slower than E Ink Gallery 3's "fast colour" setting at half a second but faster than its "best colour" setting at 1.5 seconds - would be nice to be able to force a "best colour" refresh on-demand. Should be easy enough for 'em to do in the firmware.

    EDIT:
Oh, and the black is a little pale when you're using the front light - kinda like a dark blue, really. Not terrible, but noticeable.

    EDIT EDIT:
Oh, it's not a font size thing: my PDFs of The Times are actual proper PDFs with real text, but my PDFs of The Guardian are pictures of each page instead. That'd explain it.
