Pulled the uConsole out of retirement - got the operating system in a state that means it more or less works, so long as I don't change anything - and found a use-case for it:

    uconsole-music.jpg

Dedicated music controller. It's just SSH'd into the desktop and runs a Music On Console client, lets me change the music, pause, play, whatever, all without tying up a window on the desktop.

Overkill, aye, but it's either that or leave it on the shelf with the DevTerm and its equally-fragile OS...

Had a clear out at work and found two, yes two XFX GeForce 8800 Ultras, in what appears to be absolute mint condition!

I setup 2 factor authentication for Steam, a few years ago. It never asks me for a code and, I’m sure they have staff to keep it working…

It might just have to happen, I also dug out some Corsair CM2X1024 DDR2 dimms. Now I just need a mobo and CPU to finish it off!

Started playing Horizon: Forbidden West earlier. It's the first thing I've played that's really let the 4070S stretch it's legs, and the performance difference from my 3070Ti is striking.

On a mix of medium and low settings @ 1440p my 3070Ti was regularly around 40-50ish fps, if I recall correctly... The 4070S is up around 80-100fps on very high... (Native rendering on both, no upscaling).

Also: I had no idea that adaptive triggers and haptic feedback on the PS5 DualSense controller now works with PCs via Bluetooth - at least in specific games, with H:FW being one of them. I'd used it in Death Stranding Director's Cut, but at the time it had to be wired via USB. The adaptive triggers really are fantastic, it's hard to describe how much of a difference they make. Just a shame the DualSense doesn't have a user-replaceable battery, that's one of only two flaws in an otherwise brilliant controller...

Although there's no way in hell you'll ever catch me blowing £200 on the DualSense Edge, that is an absolute joke of a price for a freakin' game controller...

I have to turn haptics off, always have, absolutely do my nut in for some reason.

I guess the plus side is it it means my battery lasts longer.

I wish I liked it, the idea is great, I just don't get on with it.

The haptic feedback stuff I’m not so bothered about, that’s just a fancier version of “rumble”…

But the adaptive triggers make a massive difference IMO. It’s the difference between “rumble vibration” and “force feedback”; the former just buzzes your hand, but the latter actively pushes back against you.

Yeah, tried that, just annoys me tbh.

I did at one time have RSI so maybe my hands are just telling me to not be silly.

Like I say, love the idea though.

Great night out last night, late birthday celebrations with my wife.
She bought us tickets to see Midge Ure on tour. The support band, India Electric Co were great, and they then reappeared as Midge's band.
Loads of Ultravox favourites, a few solo songs and then 'if you want to stand up and dance, now's the moment'...
A loud rendition of Visage's Fade to Grey followed, very appropriate looking at the audience demographic!
We stayed standing for a few belters inc Hymn and The Boys are Back as Midge was in Thin Lizzy for a while.
They then went off with one song unplayed, my favourite.
In the couple of minutes of darkness they wheeled out drums on stands.
The encore was The Voice as expected, with the extended drum ending from 1982.
A brilliant end to a great night out.

Found a stand that holds it at a better angle than the built-in kickstand:

    uconsole-music2.jpg

Just, err... don't try to *use* it in the stand, 'cos it's just sorta balanced there.

I love that you're using a near $200 device as a glorified music player. In fact it's worse than that, because the thing itself isn't even actually playing the music - it's just telling another computer what to do over SSH.

The glamorous[1] life of a tech journalist, eh?

[1]Sarcasm entirely intentional - I'm well aware of the sheer amount of work you need to get through and the hours it involves, I sure as hell wouldn't swap my comparitively cushy job for the "glamour" of 12-18 hour days

It's even worse than *that*, 'cos it ain't even a review sample - I paid good money for this, even after having paid good money for the earlier DevTerm which had exactly the same faults this one has. (My fault, I should have bought the CM4-powered version instead of the A06.)

I do occasionally use it for reading lite.cnn.com, text.npr.org, and similar through Lynx, tho'. So there's that.
