    Audio and networking work out-the-box in 24.04, stock kernel - not the patched Surface kernel. The accelerometer is detected, but doesn't rotate the screen unless you install a random GNOME Extension... which also made the screen keep turning off, so I've installed a different extension that provides manual rotation shortcuts in the systray. Touchscreen works fine, but I've no idea where the pen is so I've not tested that.

    Nope, this was not the problem: it still does it. The screen is fine until you suspend for long enough, and then when you wake it up it goes back to sleep after about 30 seconds - even if you're actively using it. Bums.

    EDIT:
    It might be related to the keyboard cover thing: just suspended and woke it without the cover attached, and it's behaving itself...

    Yeah, it's fine if I don't fiddle with the keyboard cover. Weird!

    Managed to get some Internet Archive reading done, too:

    ..before the battery ran out. After 12 years, it's not so great - haven't done a full test, but we're probably looking at about three hours, maybe four at a push, per charge.

    That's not terrible for a 12 year old device...

    The battery in my SP4 is showing as 81% of design capacity (38,050mAh out of 38,152) with 263 cycles. I ran a bunch of benchmarks a while back with up to date Win11, adaptive brightness off, and brightness at 75%. Local playback of video (using VLC) scored 3hrs 27mins for 4K and 3:46 for 1080p; streaming from YouTube (via Edge (ew)) scored 2:04 for 4K and 2:59 for 1080p. I haven't tried a 'best case scenario' test because I was more interested in using it as a media device.

    This distracted me for quite some time. Couldn't spot a TIE (for probably obvious reasons, but it would have been funny) or anything from The Expanse though.

    Some of the comments are amusing too.

    About the only thing from The Expanse big enough to show up on that would be the"Nauvoo" - the Mormon generation ship the OPA commandeered to blow up Eros.

    Just fired up Hackers on repeat, as my go-to test for battery life. Mid-point brightness, auto-adjust off, Wi-Fi on but Bluetooth off, audio muted 'cos otherwise I'll just sit there and watch the damn thing instead of doing work...

    EDIT:
    First loop, 41%. Looks like it won't quite reach the full two Hackers.

    EDIT EDIT:
    Yeah, 2h35-ish. Not terrible given its age, but tight if you're looking to watch a decent-length film. Tempting to try the experiment again but with the brightness down and powersave mode...

    I applied for a job last October. In June i had my assessments, Early November i had my interview with a positive outcome 3 days later, and within the last 30 mins, I've had the go ahead to submit my resignation at my current job as i passed my medical. Start date is Jan 12th. Just DBS and References to go.

    Yep, I'm chuffed... Pun intended, as I'll be working on the railways.

    Recently got into gundam stuff, just basics atm but slowly getting into it only got the 1/144 stuff atm.

    Very impressive work i need yo look at the transfers and panel line stuff

    A couple of months ago I saw on the BBC Somerset news site, that a new Dentist surgery was going to open in Wellington, Somerset, only 5 miles away. Went to their website and preregistered my wife and I, as they were going to offer NHS dentistry. Didn’t expect much and forgot about it.

    Out of the blue today, they phoned to offer us appointments, next week. After 4 years of no local NHS dentists, this was a very welcome surprise.

    It was the same here in West Somerset, after our previous surgery abandoned NHS work so, I knew the new surgery would face huge demand, hence my expecting little chance of success.

    IMHO, no new dentist surgery in the UK should receive planning permission without accepting at least 50% NHS patients for as long as it operates.
