If'n you know ahead of time that the car is going to be sat for a while then a solar trickle charger works wonders.

Got a DM from Nvidia about a post I made, asked for some info so they could email me.
Seems I've won a prize from the Summer competition they ran, seems I have 2 MSI 5090 32G VANGUARD SOC on the way, I move this to ruining if this is a scam but it all checks out.

I'm kinda not taking this in yet

Remember not to send any money to unlock the prize...

I entered that too, so it’s possible! And I did win a 4080 Super on Reddit. But obviously make sure you’re only sending a delivery address and getting a tracking number. No deposits or fees!!

All seems legit with the interaction and detail request, I'm fairly good with scam stuff but there's always a first
I'm not counting my gfx cards until they hatch but I'm letting a little excitement in

Gotta be honest, I don't really understand why the prize would be two GPUs? Not like you can SLI these days afaik.

That seemed weird to me, but that is indeed what Nvidia was giving away: here's the full list, including two MSI 5090s as what appears to be one single prize. Must have stock to shift!

So strange. Two prizes of one each would make infinitely more sense, you'd think.

Surely the winner is just going to sell at least one of them immediately?

The post on facebook was to name a game where you carry friend and win a card for you and them, posted that it's actually my friend who carries me in Insurgency sandstorm

Considered keeping both and have a 2nd rig for couch gaming but I don't want to fund the build so probably sell to get the upgrades, my PSU certainly isn't up to scratch

"yes sir, you've definitely won two RTX 5090s, there's just the small matter of insured shipping...."

Completely mentally exhausted when I got home but gave the car a quick swill, had a very grown up sausage and egg sandwich for tea, taxed the car and booked its MoT (£20 Halfords offer). All small things but made me feel a little better. :)

I finally have a working card printer!

I also have a “disk box” for them!

The “NFC Loading System” logo cutout was something I added. It’s the same logo that I use on the cards themselves and I’m going to try and do it in dual colours. I’m in the process of designing/prototyping some dividers for the “disk box”, since the original designer didn’t include any.

Wasn’t sure this was “meh” or not, but on reflection I think it fits better here, despite the sadness and bitter taste it leaves.

My former boss invited me to his leaving do a couple of weeks back. I left that company nearly two years ago, but he still reached out.

Wind forward to the actual evening (last night), and it could have been any other company night out while I was still working there. They’d booked almost the entire bar and it still wasn’t enough space. At least half of the hundred or more people in attendance had either left before I did, or have left since. Even the former CEO and the former CTO were there.

It’s really amazing that people I haven’t seen for years are like an old friend you’ve known all your life.

That was the first - and so far last - place I worked where senior leadership actually cared. When they talked about “putting people first”, or the importance of “work life balance”, they meant it. Sure, it wasn’t all roses: there was friction and disagreement, there were frustrations and stresses, there was a lot of hard work, and there was a lot of meaningless ****, like there is with any job. But it took me almost the full four years I was there to realise how good it was to work there. To realise that I actually looked forward to coming into work; that management actually had your back; that you wouldn’t be thrown under a bus or scapegoated; that you were all pulling in the same direction; and that even through it is a commercial operation, what we were doing was genuinely helping people. The former CEO I mentioned said for a long time that if ever redundancies were to happen, it would only happen because of a failure of her leadership, so she would always be redundancy number 1. When redundancies were imposed, it was through no fault of hers and it was totally out of her control. But she followed through with that promise and she was indeed the first to go; followed immediately by the CTO who had always mirrored that sentiment and had always made the same promise. And two and a half years after that incredibly emotional announcement meeting, they still came to the leaving do of one of their former staff.

But none of that matters when you’re bought out by a private equity firm and Tariq’s bonus is at stake if his US-based masters don’t see “line go up” on a quarterly report.

I’m glad I'm not there anymore, and it is fantastic to see all those brilliant and incredibly talented people I used to work with coming back together. But it’s depressing as **** to see that company be gutted, shredded, and torn to pieces.

I used to work at an engineering company that supplied defence parts. They were bought out by a hedge fund. Whilst there were steps put in place to potentially stop any immediate shenanigans involving aforementioned defence work, I still to this day think "Why the eff are a bunch of rich tw@ts with no knowledge of anything other than trying to make profit allowed to buy into a very serious business that could have lasting repercussions for years to come?".

    Because line go up.

If they think they can make a return on the investment then they will do it.
