A giant box with a microscopic bag of haribo inside arrived at the crack of sparrowfart.

Luckilly there was a GPU bundled with it or else I'd have been miffed.

DPD certainly were no slouches this morning.

Bad news - Sometime before Xmas, my Linux-driven PC decided it no longer contained a wifi/bluetooth card at all, despite the motherboard coming with one pre-installed.
Good news - Acting on internet advice, I left said PC unplugged from the mains overnight, and upon starting it this morning I HAZ WIFI!!!

We got our full security deposit back from the previous rental, so we’re finally rid of it. Not a surprise really—we left the place in great condition. We deep-cleaned the oven and kitchen fixtures, had the carpets cleaned throughout, and left the garden in a far better state than when we moved in. Didn't help bumping into our old neighbours (same landlord) who said he took a bunch of money off them to fix stuff.

We stopped short of painting, as we were told from the outset that it was a big no-no, despite the paintwork being nothing short of abysmal. Shouldn’t have looked at it in the dark, I suppose. There were a couple of things that could have gone against us, and I’d have held my hands up if they had—paint flaking off behind one radiator (thanks to last-minute uniform drying) and a small mark on the bathroom lino.

With that money on its way back, we’re also due £300 cashback as part of our mortgage deal, which will help repair some of the damage to my bank balance.

Next focus is a full garden makeover. It’s slightly smaller than the previous rental’s garden, but much bigger than the one before that, where I’d already done a renovation on a budget (landlord approved). Owning this place means we can invest more time and money to get it right. Plan is to tackle it in distinct sections—partly for budget reasons, and partly to avoid turning it into a building site which will leave me with one unhappy wife!

Not quite. The trick was to unplug from the mains for a bit, just restarting did nothing.

Finally got around to setting up a software-agnostic text expansion system, so I can throw boilerplate into my articles without having to type it out in full.

For 'xample, if I type ":mits" it turns into " under the permissive MIT license." If I type ":gpl3" it turns into " under the reciprocal GNU General Public License 3."

I can even use it for my Gemini stuff, as typing ":index" turns into "=> ../index.gmi Back to Index". Neato!

Even if I did know what that all means, I would never remember all the abbreviations…

I now know the why of it - Turns out that letting my PC hibernate puts the wifi card into a weird "stealth" state where it won't announce itself to the OS.
So I turned off power manglement, that's what the shutdown button is for.

One week to go to my start date with SWR, and this evening, I've signed my contract. 9 weeks of training in Basingstoke to begin with.

I still cannot believe how quiet my PC is after swapping back from my Corsair AIO cooling to the Thermalright air cooler.

I have 9 fans in there that are currently connected and I have not set up anything special in terms of fan control, just leaving it all to my motherboard and gfx card's standard settings and the Lenovo workstation type laptop that I use for work with its single fan makes more noise, even at idle.

I have a couple of fan cable splitters on the way that I will be using to connect up another couple of case fans, but given that 1 of those is a fairly low speed 230mm (to go with the other 2 x 230mm ones that are already in there) and the other 2 that are currently in there are old Gentle Typhoons, I am not expecting much sound increase.

Are you sure you built your PC in a case and, not a small shed to fit all those fans?

    Coolermaster ATCS 840

243mm wide x 580mm tall, and 630mm deep, it is huge and weighs around 13kg empty... 1 x 230mm fan in the front and 2 in the top. space for 120mm fans in the back, base, and 2 on the back of the drive rack. 6 x 5.25" bays and 6 internal 3.5" bays with space between them. I bought it with the aim to be whatever I build will fit inside it and I should never need another case. Not to say that I don't want another at some point and move this over to be a server case, but I don't NEED another.

Popped to the skip this morning to get rid of some crap that had been lying around in the shed for years, plus stopped in at the garage on the way home to book a service.

And that's my adulting done for the weekend.

Just been on the Government Gateway site, to see if there might be a rebate waiting for me, No...

Whilst there, I checked my state pension forecast and, it's already as high as it can go, so no need to worry about that in 5½ years. Given my employment record, hampered by my long term mental health problems, that is definitely awesome.
