Having an air conditioner.

Last night when I came to bed, my office room was showing 30C. Had I not already turned on the AC unit about an hour prior, my bedroom would have been the same temperature.

I woke up cold this morning, freezing cold.

My only regret is not buying two of them so I could have one downstairs.

 

AC units are awesome, and as an added bonus you can further cool downstairs with the air flow from the spinning electricity meter, its great!

 

Damn, I have a digital smart meter, it doesn’t have spinning wheels…

Power usage is a concern, but it’s a price worth paying for not waking up in puddles of sweat. It’ll be dwarfed by the car charger anyway.

 

no no i get it, having a decent nights sleep is worth it and having an AC unit with a built in timer is even better, that mini heatwave we had last year i ended up using mine quite bit to the point where my electricity bill jumped to nearly an extra £200

 

Couple of solar panels and you're sorted. That's how mine is being done.

 

FYI - Octopus Energy announced (this very morning!) that they'll be doing their own house batteries next year. They claim 30% cheaper than current ones.

1: Nook - A 2kWh shoebox that simply plugs into a wall socket, and can be stacked 5 high (no holes to drill, so rental-friendly)
2: Nook Colossus - More like Tesla Powerwall, a 10kWh wall hardwired battery that can be stacked 3 deep.

Both will talk to solar, and connect to Octopus' "intelligent" tariffs to charge themselves when it's cheapest

 

I got curious, and, handily, octopus has updated with my usage from yesterday.

The spike just after 1800 is from the oven, and then the spike at 2200 is from the aircon - but that latter spike tails off quite quickly…



To compare, I had the car plugged in on Friday and ran the aircon overnight:



Most of Friday’s usage really was just the car charger (from Ohme’s app):

Though how much that will climb this week remains to be seen

 

Indeed, after your post and a trawl through google I reckon a 1600 BTU version is on my shopping list when they come in stock again, I could use the extra 400 BTU's of cooling and the machine mart one I've got is a noisy bugger.

Been on tramadol for a while to manage neuropathic pain. Works but does make me a bit loopy
