I know that the Librarian says Eeeeek at least once, but I can't for the life of me find which book it's in

 

Multiple books .

But the earliest instance I can recall right now is the one I’m currently reading, Lords and Ladies.

Had a rescheduled online appointment to redo our bit of mortgage we need for the house as rates had dropped.

Nice timing, rates had dropped yet again this morning so we've knocked another year of the mortgage.

Now just to wait for everyone else to.do their bit so a few months left yet. Ugh.

House buying has always been frustrating for us as we're two massive control freaks.

 

The main one I'm thinking of is where he's telling a story about a couple of people and someone asks 'what happened to them?' or similar, and the reply was Eeeek

 

I can open a window in my house, YAY!!!!

This might sound like a simple thing but they have been covered since end of may whilst house was being rendered and the work has been dragged out due to our weather system, too wet, too hot, too wet, too hot etc, arrrgh but is now complete.

Pushed through and got payroll done (well in the final review stage with the FD so my bit is 95% done) in 1 day so I don't have to come in on Friday which is now a non work day for me. Woooooo

Also have started playing Fallout: New Vegas on 360 / Series X (via 360 physical copy so completely offline if I want it to be) as I realised I have never actually played it despite playing the others. Taking my time and soaking it all in but really enjoying it so far. Runs absolutely fine on the 360 although does get the FPS boost on the Series X.

 

The full fibre man does indeed cometh! 500Mbps FTTP on 24th July, still with Plusnet.

So, basically, you've been basting all this time?

 

Messing around with different models in LM Studio to help my wife with her novel writing / planning analysis. Essentially benchmarking it alongside tools she already has access to via paid membership (Pro Writing Aid) to see what sort of outputs can be generated. Specifically the tools in question analyses what has been written and gives feedback and suggestions for improvement but critically does not do any actual writing itself. For example it will highlight if certain connections are missing (in what has been written so far) between protagonist and supporting characters that are generally expected in a certain genre and make suggestions on how this could be achieved.

Testing around with a mid size Gemma and Nvidia Nemotron model seems to be giving analyse at least comparable which is awesome as it means she can just query to her hearts content without worrying about cost barriers (you only get so many free requests before needing to pay for tokens with Pro Writing Aid).

Seeing my wife's face light up with some of the prompt responses was just awesome to see! I subsequently lost her for the rest of Sunday afternoon and she dove head first into plotting, planning and scene analysis.

Also on an interesting note, and this maybe my current lack of understanding, my MBP (M3 Pro with 18GB unified memory) was processing around 60% the tokens / sec of my laptop (8940HX / 32GB DDR5 / RTX 5070Ti (12GB)) despite it running completely off its battery. I was kind of expecting the relative lack of RAM to be more of a bottleneck in this scenario but it didn't seem to care.

 

The cost issue is why I also do a lot of local AI things, Unified RAM decent bandwidth running mostly on GPU gives the mac more RAM to play with, 12Gb of RAM of your 5070 is not a lot on the laptop for models, so you need to keep models within its VRAM pool or it spills to system RAM and performance is tragic, it is why my Strix Halo games machine can be better than my desktop 5080 as it too has a much larger pool of unified RAM despite much weaker GPU.
