Well? Is it because it's popular - or because it's not? Is it cool until it becomes popular, then it's just a fad? Take the matrix movies for example. 1999 - The original matrix is released - it's cool, it's novel (general consensus amung public) 2000+ - It gets copied, popular, ripped off, becomes stale and overdone 2003? - Matrix 2/3 come out after much marketing hype and it's instantly demonised as uncool. Ipods - cool because everyone has one? Fad because everyone has one? Is thinking something is cool make it not cool, because having something cool has to be understated?
Cool is just someones opinion based generally on what the jones are doing, or what a so called expert thinks. Ya know, I like your new car, it's cool, maybe I should get one. Ya know, I like your new boat, it's cool, maybe I should get one. Ya know, I like your new island, it's cool, maybe I should get one.
My personal opinion is that if it is cool to me, then it's cool, but then again I've never really followed fashion, fads or things like that. I've always used my best judgement as to what I thought was cool, ie- does it look good, does it accomplish something, and of course is it gadgety? hehee I still think the Matrix is cool, and I think ipod's are cool because they are mp3 players not because they are popular, In all actuality I think I'd rather have an Ultra 8 in 1 MP3 player , but that's probably because I'm cheap and the functionality is right up my alley. So, I guess something is cool because it's cool to me, but it may not be cool to you -Fiz
Yea, i agree, i like to be anti-trend because i dont wanna be a sheep - therefore i think the general cool isnt necessarily cool, and alternative but not extreme is better. Everyone finding their own neiche, and other peoples perception of things = cool??
So does that make you cool? because you try not be cool like the popular 'cool crowd' more like the cool cause its 'uncool'? or does that make you uncool? wow I just confused myself, but I'm cool with that! -Fiz
I define cool, so if you need to check just ask me and I will give you a direct and authoritative answer on if something is cool or not.
I dont know! But surely thinking you're cool is an uncool thing, because you shouldnt need the self gratification of being cool to be cool.
Well said!!! I was just being sarcastic and you turned it around into a great statement!!!! You Bindi!!!! -Fiz PS: How was that for cool :: kna ::?
since when did the matrix become not cool ? its 100% cool from the start to the end! anyone who says otherwise is a crazy person. i tihnk cool depends on a group suggestion. It only matters what you and your little clik think in reality, so whatever they think it is, generally (and consensus could be common as cliks have similar interests and stuff) is cool. I think fat black guys are intrinsicly cool! Anybody else ?
So you're implying coolness is a subjective opinion? Surely 2+3 were trying to be the orignal too hard and thus lost their coolness and became "hollywood". You can argue that they were good movies or not, but coolness is a different thing. I see your point - social groups help define coolness within the group. I have arguments about coolness and understated effects of things with my sister all the time (she's only 12 though). She things everything fashionable is cool, and i think it's too common, and the way to be cool is to be anti-fashion but not anti everything. etc. Like she thinks ipods are the pinicle of coolness and wants a pink mini, but i tell her that they are the work of the sheep (and U2). But then again i want a refirb ipod, cause it's like 50% off for a 20gig not because they're cool.. but then i struggle with the thought of owning an ipod.
You define your own 'cool' If someone doesn't like it, they will think you are 'uncool' however, you may think their 'cool' is 'uncool' thus making their 'uncool' opinion null and void... maintaining your 'cool'. Simple as that.
everyones perceptions of cool are going to change and be unique to each and everyone. for example when your like 16 or summit you might think wearing your jeans round your arse is cool but 5 years later you look back and you are like why on earth did i do it, i looked like an arse (literally!!!!) i think "cool" just changes overtime as peoples perceptions change aswell.
The thing is, what people say they think is 'cool' may not always been based on the same factors. For example, people say the iPod is 'cool' because it looks nice, not because it's technologically the best mp3 player around, because as everyone knows, it isn't. Yet on the flipside, someone might say a certain Ferrari is cool because it can do 0-60 in 5 seconds...it just all depends on what stands out in the product as different if you ask me. I personally don't care if someone else thinks what I buy is cool, I buy it depending on what I want for my money, not what other people want. <A88>
I dunno, i've thought about it a lot too. I hate when stuff is cool because other people think it is cool. So the whole perception of something being cool is because everyone else thinks it is cool. Therefore if you sort of follow what im saying, if everyone only thinks it is cool ("oh man, andy reckons this is cool so it HAS to be" .. but andy only thinks it is cool because john thinks it is...), then ultimately the said item is not cool, or only one person thinks it is cool. I call that phenomena a 'fad'. Too much for half 2 in the morning methinks... /die
Only in your area, I define it in Northeast US. The Matrix is still cool, it just had a lame ending. And the mechs more than make up for it. Ubermich I went crosseyed thinking about what you said... and it's based off of the mass opinion as you should (have) learn(ed) in high school But yeah in all seriousness it's in your head for the most part. But the iPod is definately a trend/fad, not "cool" imo. I still have one but I like it because of it's simple and intuitive interface, not because everyone else out there has one. Seems to fit into my room fairly nicely too despite it being the only brilliantly white thing in there.
Dude, I learned my version of cool *way* before high school. My version of cool was figuring out how the dining room chairs were put together when I was 3... Figuring out how the ratchet mechanism on the flagpole at gradeschool worked when I was 6... putting my first computer together when I was 9... building a voltron-esque 3-ft tall contraption out of lego when I was 10... You can declare cool however you want, but that's my version. Reading schematics is cool. Taking apart code to see what the heck it actually does when you select '1' is cool. Reading the latest developments in quantum research is cool. Ipods? Not really cool. Clothes? I don't see a coolness... especially not things like baggy pants hanging off your butt. Cars? Maybe, if I can see how they work (why my truck is cool). Outer appearances aren't cool to me... the inner-workings are. What can I say?
you speak the truth! the order goes... 1. MC Hammer 2. Sugarhill Gang 3. Vanilla Ice and making a new entry... 4. Fatman Scoop But nobody can, nor ever will top the hammer Hammertime 4eva!
