So I was just wondering what does the little people of BT do?

Basicly: What is your profession, or what you're studying, and what are your career aspirations. What do you want to do?

    ---

I'm currently studying IT in University of Applied Sciences (polytechnic basicly, but they tend to use fancy names here). First year over and currently being unemployed for the summer as I didn't manage to get internship or any other work for the summer, sadly. At least I have some savings so I manage to keep myself alive.

IT was just something I decided to go for after I had been unemployed for months and working mainly as a security guard when I had opportunity to have a job. I just didn't want to work as a security guard for rest of my life, since the pay check was generally pretty small when compared to the hours I had worked. So I choose IT, thou' I considered finance/business too. IT was pretty much no-brainer for me also as I enjoy working around computers. Aiming for the Networking Technology mostly as I like hardware and configuring software more than building software (programming).

Lately (during the summer-brake) I've been questioning myself, do I really want to work on IT. I've been really keen to stock-trading for few years now, I've traded (invested) some of my money and tried to learn as much as I can (no I haven't done any huge profits and mostly I cover my profits with losses when I try something utterly insane and greedy). I've just noticed how much time I spend doing research and reading financial stuff, also reading books about stock-trading/money management, and interviews of successful traders and money-managers (Jack D. Schwager's books mostly). I just enjoy managing even my own money, it is just so psychological in terms of controlling greed, taking risk, recognizing that you've been wrong and taking the losses before they get out of hand, etc... Simply: challenging and very fascinating. Something that I've been truly enjoying...

I am just not interested to work on any other sector of finance or business, so I haven't really considered dropping studies of IT and going for BBA or maybe even MBA, as they are so wide-spread studies generally and even when focusing on money management, it wouldn't propably lead to job I wanted. Could there be some easier ways, I dont know? (At the beginning of third quarter I am starting to paper-trade on fake-portfolio to build somekind of track-record to see if I could be successful enough trader with little bit bigger money. If so, maybe that opens some possibilities, who knows...).

So currently just trying to force myself to keep enough intrest on IT so I can at least get a decent job that I could enjoy, and earn enough money so I could possibly save some of it, and try full-day stock-trading on my own money someday (hopefully).

    ---

Mainly just popped this thread out here as I believe it may help others to consider what kind of career they want to build for themselves, and what kind of possibilities there might be.

And also just generally figuring out what kind of people lurks around the darkest corners of BT-forums (in terms of profession).

For the moooodzz, if there is thread like this or you find this to be utterly stupid, please delete.

And yes there is propably horrible typos all over the place, I try to fix them tomorrow :hip:. 2:58 am here.

Currently in retail at a crappy supermarket but there's a great opportunity with high precision welding, machining and milling on the horizon  A job I can use for modding = win!

I always thought I’d end up doing something involved with IT considering I’ve spent half my life using one.

At first I was stuck in the family business which involved working in a hotel and collecting rent from down-and-out tenants. I thought I’d start doing web design so as usual setup a website, started advertising lost faith in the idea and was back to scratch one. Then I thought… Why not design a website offering guides on starting businesses from dog walking, babysitting, to running your own hotel (I basically know everything plus a few tips and tricks on running a hotel) I lived and managed one for years!) Expanding as I go…. Oh before that I setup a baby auction website where mums could basically sell and buy their second-hand baby stuff (women spend hours doing this on facebook on their own pages) seemed like a good idea at the time.

Then I got stuck in a phase where I didn’t know what I wanted to do and needed money so thought how can I get employed at princess yachts? (Biggest employer down here with generally amazing pay) well I can’t get a apprenticeship as I’m too old (22) and too stupid (notice my grammar) yeah you hate me. So I’ll pick a trade get some training and try to get into the company that way. I picked welding. Spot an opening for a welder apply result right? Well… Having the £500 to pay for the training for that welding course is another story.
So I figured. Can’t seem to do anything, and can’t get a job (applied for about 300 jobs now without a damn invite to an interview) thanks then.

So instead of committing suicide I thought hey let’s start a little gardening service, with goals of it being a nationwide service in a couple of years. So far this has been going great and I’m really enjoying it. Getting it to the point of Virgin or Microsoft is another story altogether.

Basically I’m a freaking failure on an income of around £6000/year.

IT Technician under the brolly of a global tyre firm. Supporting a mixture of 60 XP PC's, many remotely and a few Server2003's atm, pretty much on my own now. This includes permissions, Exchange, ISA, consumables, peripherals, components, upgrading, fixing hardware and software issues, dsl/vpn issues. All good fun. It could be better paying though.

PC repair and sales. It's fun except for the weeks when forty machines come in with the exact same Reveton infection, and I spend 5 days staring at Malwarebytes until my eyes fall out.

Downsides: meagre wage, not much variety.

Perks: get to wear whatever I want, say almost anything I want and eat pot noodles while I work.

If I'm really feeling low, I can actually calculate exactly how much my boss has paid me to eat a pot noodle. If it's more than the cost of the pot noodle, I've managed to turn a profit on sitting down and eating a pot noodle, which not many people can claim to have done.

I'm a student but I'm about to start a placement year working as an embedded software engineer (still not 100% sure what I'll be working on since it sounded like there were multiple potential projects)

I have a BS in Silviculture. I spent 11 years in the culinary field. I have worked under two Jame Beard award winners, opening 3 restaurants on 2 continents. I picked up an AA in Culinary Arts along the way along with credits to complete a BA in Hellenistic Religions.

I left that completing an apprenticeship as a freelance photographer specializing in corporate imagery. I have worked for an agency in the GCC as well as freelance in South Africa, primarily with global PR firms.

I managed to pick up bladesmithing and welding as a hobby, and am currently restoring a 1967 Pontiac Catalina. I'm an avid shooter; enjoying the Glock 19 and 30, Mossberg 590A1, and the AR-15 platforms. I've raised a Burmese, and have a herd consisting of an angry old Tabby, a battle scarred Dachshund and a crazed mutant Terrier. I'm married to an enthusiastic, crazed liberal and incredibly smart woman. And there is winter wheat waiting to be harvested in my back yard.

And that, my friends, is the severely truncated version.

What is it that I *do*? What ever the hell I want to. I live.

Stuck as a retail manager for the minute, have arts masters and used to computer game design till everything went to ****, jumped out and managed to get a job as an analyst for BT and developed tenosynovitis in my right hand so struggle to type now. Left that to come where I have been for two years doing 6 times the work for a 3rd the pay, even working as much as 20 hours a week for free, usually just around 8-10 per week for free.

Whilst going through these changes had to stay where I was in the country as I am also fortunate enough to own some property I let out, needed to stay near to complete renovations and deal with issues as cheaply as possible as I didn't have s much free cash as I should have back then.

At the moment I have been stuck for around a year at my current job due to a car crash leaving me useless for a large amount of things, not really what any new employer would want. But I am going for surgery next week to correct the problem, after that back on the job hunt and see what new adventures lie out there for me. Will hopefully do something completely different as I like a change every few years.

I do a very similar sort of job, except I don't use Malwarebytes or eat Pot Noodles. I haven't much to do at the minute as there's barely any repairs in and I sure as crap aren't manning the shop. (I hate people :hehe: ) So if anyone lives near the Castleford area, could you kindly break something for me to fix? :D

I manage a small team of developers for a Major international financial services firm, and am busy for a few years now with setting up what I hope to become my sole source of income, a marketing firm.

Before this, I worked at a local bank for a few years and built them a mobile banking platform (i.e. cellphones), and improved security on their internet banking solution.

I studied Software Development (which in this case was a Diploma, a MCSD with some squiggly bits attached).

I'm a personal trainer with a whole host of specialist qualifications, a street dancer and sci-fi author (just recently published). All three professional. Pretty varied mix, but I like it. Gives me a nice balance of physical and mental work. :)

Wow, this never came up but it sounds like a nice mix! What name are you published under? Give yourself a little plug.. ;)

ON TOPIC: I've worked since I was 17 in IT. Moved in to the ITIL type service-minded side with Help Desk work and a year ago I made a shift to the surveillance industry.
I now support the number one IP-based surveillance software in the world and help customers with any and all of the problems that can occur with their setups. Generally it's their own network that's the problem, let's not go down that road though. :)

Currently looking for a new line of work, I'm financially crippled with 2 kids so taking time out (and a pay cut) to re-train in anything else is proving a bit difficult. When the Mrs returns to work at the end of her maternity leave then money should be less problematic.. I hope. :sigh:

No one asked before. ;) It's why I had to stop gaming so much, as suddenly my life exploded with work from three different areas. Kind of why I disappeared from BF3 suddenly. I miss the banter.

As for where I'm published, the first one is my part of an anthology, available here (Christian D'Amico). There are 4 more on the way, followed by a full novel hopefully next year if editing goes well. :)

Wow long our short story. Left went to the army RLI in Rhodesia at 16, moved down to South Africa and did another 2 1/2 years in South West Africa Angola with the SA Police. Then joined the murder and robbery unit in South Africa for 5 years

Got sick of all the corrupt politics in the police. and got into retail. Left south Africa as a sportswear buyer, projects manager and here I'm in retail management.

I would do anything to get out of retail. Best job in the UK I had was managing the old lillywhites not the one idiot Mike Ashley owns. We still had morals those days.

I bumbled through school without any focus and was very average where I should have shone. I ended up gaining a 2:1 Philosophy BA, then I embarked on several years of hedonism and drug abuse, during which time I lost everything and racked up substantial debts. I filled this time with menial jobs - usually physical in nature.

When I got my life back together around seven years ago I landed a job working for a Christmas hamper supplier, and I work for the sales & marketing department under the umbrella of project management. My job is actually very diverse, with elements of IT, systems administration, retail project management, relationship management, recruitment, training and very occasionally I actually speak to a customer.

It's not something I would have chosen, but it's something I can do fairly well, it doesn't involve sales (the bane of my life), and it pays fairly well for the effort required - with the option of more if I work harder.

I still don't really know what I want longer term, but due to financial constraints I find it very hard to add any further strings to my bow at this stage, which makes me attractive to fewer potential employers.
