I think the correct term for those is dimpled. I nearly went for grooved and dimpled discs on my celica but I heard the dimpling can cause a lot of noise when the discs are hot due to air expanding in the dimples themselves. Went for grooved coated Mtec discs in the end plus yellowstuff pads.

Yeah those are dimpled - not my first choice either really, as I've heard exactly the same thing as yourself. What were your Mtec rotors like with the yellowstuff pads? I'm trying to decide on a brake setup for the GT4 at the moment, but there are so many options, and I need somthing that's good on the road and the track, split about 80/20. I might end up using the standard ST205 brakes with different pads for a while.

That is very true mate, my friend had EBC discs and Greenstuff on a Saxo VTR many years ago and worked pretty well for him :)

Oh yeah I know Green isn't for proper track use which is why I wasn't driving silly hard but what I was trying to say is that I had done the same track 6 months before with standard brakes and they lasted longer before I started getting any brake fade, once they cooled were fine again but the EBC discs warped when they cooled down giving a bad judder through the steering column when braking there after :(

I've used Redstuff on another car and while they were much better than Greenstuff still weren't as good as I was expecting, I then upgraded to DS2500's which were really good and stayed with them until I sold the car. On my Evo now I run AP Racing "floating" discs and Carbotech XP8 pads which are the dogs, I can stop uber quick at silly speeds and even after 20+ laps on a track are still going strong :D

Never used Yellowstuff though but im sure they are not road legal where as DS2500 and Carbotech XP8's are :)

Interesting your mate had a VTR and favoured the greenstuffs, several people in our club have sworn never to touch them again after having pad crumbling inside 200 miles with fast road use!

    Floating AP's... Sexy. :D

After a weekend with the puddle jumper I'm highly tempted to drive it to VW HQ and ask them to get 47mpg out of it with me in the car. The best I have managed is 39 and I frankly do not believe it will do 47mpg. I also wouldn't be rushing to buy another car with a DSG box as me and the car often disagree as to which gear it should be in. :D

Other than that its pretty fun to drive surprisingly quick.

Most likely will do on a rolling road with no wind resistance and minimal weight. In real life you got close to no chance unless you have a 50mph non-stop commute!

I have similar issues with my Abarth Punto Evo, Fiat claim something like 47.9mpg on Combined but best I have managed is 45mpg but more typically 38-40. In my old diesel the claim was 42mpg and I regularly did 47, so I have to admit I was hoping for regular 50s out of this engine based on numbers but stop/start falsely bumps up the numbers.

Still like you say these modern little engines go bombing along at a fair lick and quite enjoyable, 180+ bhp out of 1368cc is not bad going, I have a manual though and incredibly short gears which need ninja skills so can see the attraction of an automated DSG box but have never tried one, I'd imagine it takes part of the fun away.

Old photo before I esseesse'd it (sports kit)

Nice looking car. :thumb: I'm much the same as you. My 2003, 83K miles on the clock GT TDI regularly gets 60mpg on my morning commute which I think is more than the official figures. I was hoping for similar from the Polo but to not breach 40mpg on the same route is disappointing. The dealer did say we probably would not get an accurate idea of fuel consumption until the engine was about 6 months old.

The seven speed auto means even when you override it getting used to which gear for which circumstance takes time and you would forever be changing up and down. You can get the same engine in the Golf GT and Scirocco (Which I have driven) with a manual and if it were possible I would love to try the Polo with that combination I think I would prefer it to the DSG.

Whilst we're on the subject of MPG, my 2010 1500cc DCi Clio now @ 110bhp still does 63mpg if I drive it up and down the country at 60 and 30mph as required and keep the rev counter well below 2500, but lately I've been driving in a more 'hurried' manner, and she's only seeing 45 at best. Truth is, I'm just enjoying those extra 20 horses too much to go back to 'overly sensible' driving... And 45 still isn't bad. I took Dads Insignia to work the other day because I needed the trailer and my car doesn't have a tow-bar - I couldn't even get that thing above 40mpg! :D

I am very sorry, but Americans get some cars that I am nothing but jealous of:
Camaro, Mustang, Corvette, Charger, Challenger, Viper and some more... basicvally anything big and American
    Also: the Lancer Evo

Yes, I know that some of these are available in europe, but not a SINGLE ONE of those is available here. There are some people in South Africa that have them, but paying >1.000.000 ZAR (around 100.000 Euros) for a Second hand US SPEC Camaro is beyond being ripped off.

Edit: Also, compared to Europe, fuel is cheap Stateside... much like this end of the world (my brother almost did a happy dance to see <1Euro/Litre)

You're not wrong about the fuel costs. It's silly cheap in the US and Canada compared to here and other parts of Europe. I have to fill the tank twice every 10 days, more if I'm doing long distance work... At £1.43/litre that's a lot of travel expenses to have to add to clients bills

its funny, because ive always said europeans get all the cool stuff to play with. american muscle cars are just big, ugly, and crude. and only recent years have received decent powerplants. how many decades did it take ford to finally ditch the iron pushrod 5.0L for example. and by that time, europeans were regularly making more power out of ~2.0 liter engines.

basically, americans and american auto makers have a hard time accepting change. did you know SVT put IRS in the mustang in '99? predictably it cornered and rode better then the solid axle from grandpas tractor that they had used for eons, but nobody wanted it so they stopped making them and went back to solid axle.

    N$9.95/litre here...that's 95 octane unleaded.
In real money, that's around GBP 0.8, or 0.96Euros, or 1.22 USD

Edit: Wicked - That's true... however, Muscle cars have a charm due to their lack of refinement.

I've got a different story about fuel economy. Ford state that my 2L Mondeo TDCI will do 47 mpg, I always get somewhere between about 45 and 52 mpg. On motorway runs that'll go up to 54, and it'll go a little higher if I go a little faster to keep it on boost.
