Don't forget, he was talking American Fords. EU Fords are far superior, and I'm not just saying that. Most people in the States say the Focus is a POS, yet here it is still one of the best handling (if not THE best) cars in its class, thanks to its independant rear suspension. AFAIK that cost Ford Europe a lot of money to do, and I'm wondering if it has been omitted on the US models? Here most Fords are reknowned for an all-round nice drive. Good handling, nice gearbox, good clutch. Certainly true for the Focus we used to own, my Ka, and the two new Mondeo's we've had.
