Just got Ubuntu 8.04 installed and running, but wondering what people install once the main install is done eg codecs, apps etc?

As I know what I would isntall with Vista but not whichs apps to put on Ubuntu

Also is there a remote access like Remote Desktop? Or is VNC the only way?

    Cheers

You could enable XDMCP (via SSH if it's over t'interweb) to get a remote connection.

With the space available on modern hard drives, I'd install everything I can find and then figure out what's useful. I'm not too long from installing Fedora 8 (or 9) on my new pc so I'll let you know.

Install VLC first of all, aswell as your usual range of email tools.

Next I have GIMP, ktorrent, open office, blue-proximity (locks my computer when I'm out of range), and ushare for my 360.

Everything else is mainly for coding purposes. If you tell us what you'd install in Vista we can give you the equivilents.

Ok I will look into XDMCP.

    Vista Install:

Webcam - MS Lifecam VX3000 - Dont think this will work
MSN - Both Live and Classic as use Live to talk to mates, and Classic to hook into our exchange box
    VLC
    mIRC
    Office 2007
    Adobe CS3 Suite
    uTorrent
    Newsleecher

A few other little things but they are soem of hte major things I install. I need to setup a virtual xp machine for Activesync as well

Never done remote connections with Linux so will need to learn up, just use to ticking the box and connecting directly via RDC

    SSH server
    xorg-x11
    Fluxbox
    firefox
    amsn
    amarok
    thunderbird

    Then small bits and bobs

and I finish with Openoffice (6-8 hours emerge time :))

In Ubuntu, I install Skype, Automatix (and pretty much everything it includes), Deluge for bit torrent, and Warsow for gaming.

Then I sit back and tweak my appearance settings for hours on end.
