Down time is something that really can not be predicted. On my end I would make sure that I wasn't doing anything that could cause problems.

Edit: crap, hit the reply button but wasn't done yet...

Upload speed is pretty darn good. The server center is being serviced with bandwidth from 4 Tier 1 providers. Very fast :D

To all who were interested: I will be starting to do something by the middle of this next month (December). Expect a PM or something along those lines :thumb:

I know alot that will offer it for say a 24 hour period, great but to get it you have to apply for it which gets annoying.

    I don't care about SSL because I'm not buying a certificate.. :)

My biggest pet peve is over loaded servers..

For example.. 3.76 3.01 2.29 Thats the load averages for my current host..

Unfortinately I wouldn't be able to offer SSH as I first started out. In the future it would deffo be something I'd like to be able to offer though ;)

Wow, what host would allow the loads to be that high?

Actually both of my hosts.. :(

My one host I've seen up in the 5's.. Of course, not always that high.. Sometimes it's so bad pages wont load..

So maybe it sounds like I'm looking to switch?

Just purely out of curiosity, what kind of hardware are you thinking of..

With the company I'm going with right now backups are made every Saturday between 2 and 6 in the morning (central standard time).

The company I'll be going with for the moment will be using at least dual xeon 2.8GHz processors with 1GB of ram.

So pretty much I'm moving forward with this. I really appreciate the people who have offered input, advice, and showed interest in purchacing hosting.

Feel free to ask more questions, and I'll let everyone know when progress is made :thumb:

Set one up with some mates ~ 6 months ago.... The major problem you'll have is getting business outside places you yourself can promote it. Unless you can get adverts in a paper/mag or somewhere where you'll get interest from.
Getting 20 people now is great, however can you KEEP that number of people sustained over 12 months? Also, what happens if you cant afford to keep the company running? Do the customers simply loose their accounts?

I'm in this for the long haul, so if I lose a significant number of customers I'll either have to take the loss for a while or find a new source of customers.

And advertising is something I've been thinking seriously about, but I won't do any of that until I've got a server to put customers on :thumb:

Does that mean you're going to resell services on someone elses machine or are you using your own machine in someone elses NOC?

No offense, and I trust you completely, it's the actual provider I'm skeptikal about. I always have been with reseller packages since you have no physical control over the server.

The company I was complaining about I used to resell for and quit because of the server loads. Their servers being overloaded made me look bad. :(

Still consider me intrested though, my expierences is a sampling of one. :)

Well, the thing is I would have had to get 20 people at the very least to bring the price of a dedicated server down to where I could stomach the loss for a couple months while I built a better customer base. Since that isn't going to happen, I figured I could rent a resellers account until I am making enough to get the dedicated server, then make the move.

I would much rather be using a dedicated server, but I just couldn't afford to throw that much money at it from the getgo.

If the server/provider turns out to be crap while I'm initially testing the account, I will go somewhere else.

another option is to get a VPS (virtual private server)
then you have a little more control over server :thumb:

H2O-G33K watch out if you leave oneandone that you pay the bill.
I dont know if they still use that rubbish "paperless" billing system but when I was with them they locked me out of my account so I couldn't see my bill and so couldn't pay it.

Ended up with the debt collectors writing me a very costly £15 pound letter for only £10 that I owed oneandone

and I use 1and1, but I got it while it was free, so I only pay $6/year for my domain :p
