For mouse, look up the Logitech G500. Not sure how much it is now, but it's not really a budget mouse, it's pretty much high end and amazing. But it just happens to be a good price. If you can stretch to that price, go for it. It is WELL worth it.

As for gaming on a keyboard and mouse, you just have to play and play and learn from practice and experience. The good news is that pretty much every FPS works the same, so if you get good at one of them, you'll be good at all of them. Also, make sure that you alter the sensitivity within the game to suit you. If the sensitivity is too low, you end up moving your mouse across the entire mat, and the crosshair still hasn't moved enough to reach your target. Which is awful.. And if it's too high, you'll find it hard to be pin point accurate for the often important head shots. So you need to find a good middle ground. It's very rare that I play a FPS and don't at least tweak the sensitivity to suit me better.

If you really struggle, you could just start playing some offline game (like Halflife 2 or whatever), and set it on easy mode. And just play and play, and start increasing the difficulty as you notice yourself getting better. Personally I think the best game to do this would probably be Unreal Tournament 2004. It's just so smooth and the AI is so good. It jumps and ducks and provides a really good challenge, and there is a wide selection of difficulty levels. Great game too. A little old now, but I would guess that it's probably the best game you could get for a thorough FPS training session.

Oh and one last thing. Having a nice smooth mouse mat is really important. You'll never have an easy time if you have a mouse mat that isn't very slippy. You ideally want almost no friction between the mat and the mouse, so that your mouse glides around nice and smooth and easy. There are lots of mats to choose from, but the best one I've ever seen, is called a Razer Sphex. I've tried lots of mats but that one is magical.

Darksiders - I didn't think I'd like it, but it almost took me back to the Zelda days on the N64.

Just to be different from what everyone else is suggesting:

Any of the Telltale games. Particularly Monkey Island and Sam and Max: Series 3. Although the new Back to the Future game is quite good if your a big fan of the films.

    Also Batman Arkham Asylum?
