    Hi All,

Due to the most recent issue of Custom PC's build a futureproof budget PC, I've been driven to build myself a new system. This will mainly be used for gaming, a few old titles as well as new ones (World of Warcraft mostly).

The thing is, the graphics card that is recommended as an upgrade (Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 Xtreme) is proving difficult to get hold of at the stated price of £113.

What other options are there around that price bracket, that are still as fast or faster than the one mentioned?

    Looking forward to your input.

What about another brand of 5850 I.E xfx 5850 for £100 at aria, or 6870 for 123.95 both same kinda performance(6870 over 5850 if willing) or can get a nvidia gtx 460 £130?

6870 is my preference 460 if you wish to fold in future

Can say the XFX 6870 from Aria is pushing the right buttons right now :)

But it is an XFX :( appaz it's also very noisy too. The Sapphire 6870 is available from pixmania for £125, but then you have to deal with their crappy service and pay a tenner for postage.

go for the 6870 but if you really cant stand the xfx one then go for the 5850 and buy a new game with the left over

Thanks for the suggestions all, the 6870 looks promising. I will have a look at some benchmarks.

Oooh, that's got me thinking. I know SLI'd 295s don't scale all that well, but it'd nice to have a play.

To the OP, I'll add my vote to the HD5850. Still an excellent card for the money.

I got an HD6870 from Pixmania and had no trouble with their service. In fact the slowest part was when it got to the UK and sat waiting for the lazyass courier to sort out delivery. I know Pixmania get a slagging but I can't complain based on my experience. Although now others are matching the price I would rather shop in the UK, but that's just sensible.

What's wrong with XFX by the way? I've had several XFX cards and never had any problems. My HD5770 with 'egg' cooler was a great card especially. Have I missed something here?

I can't crossfire, the board will only have one slot. It's crunch time, I am literally ready to order, but split between the XFX 6870 or the Sapphire 5850. Leaning more towards the 5850, but can only find it on Pixmania for a decent price.
