I may be incredibly incredibly lucky, cos anything completely stupid I do seems to be fixable. I've only ever had one occasion when I've broken a bit of hardware irrepairably - I snapped a graphics card - I laid it down on the floor when the phone rang... I was on the phone for about 30mins, came back totally forgetting about it and i trod on it

I shorted an old motherboard I had once with a screw - twice - and once i removed the screw it worked fine.

Broke my 7900GT recently. Clocked the RAM a bit far, it started artefacting then wouldn't display a thing. Only 25 days left in warranty but Ebuyer refunded me in full and now I have an 8800GTS OC and change :D

no offence but are you physically or mentally retarded I don't see how anyone could break so much hardware.... how do you break so many mice I threw mine against the wall forgetting it was still plugged in the only damage cause was the casing cracked and as the usb plugged was ripped out from the force of the mouse and so the little carbon jumper bit tore off so I just have the pins now in the socket still works just a bit dodgy

random mATX P4 board, changed the standard P4 HSF mounting bracket for a plate underneath the board for bolt-through heatsinks, wasnt paying attention and crushed a little cap underneath the board - oops. I think this the only thing in which I've played an active part in its death. I've had a few close calls, but always manage to luck out somehow (touches wood)

Had a 9800XT pop on me, back when they were a billion quid - oddly enough it was the only thing in my pc that wasnt either modded or overclocked (it clocked like crap) and got a new one under warranty

Had 2 dead sets in a row of 1GB Corsair 3200LL Pro years ago, never got the chance to try to kill them - I was quite amused (they were free), corsair less so, especially as they were shipping them out next-day from the states each time (about $350 in total for the 3 sets :hehe: )

I was pulling an ati 9000 pro out of my case to take it back to where I got it to use the warrenty to get something better. as i was pulling it out i snagged a cap on something and broke it off. It wasn't broken before that but it sure was afterwards.

i've lost an old mobo & cpu & an old psu a couple of years ago. they were a couple of years old & about a month away from being retired to part-time 2nd pc lan gaming & net duties :waah: the psu was a cheapo but i didnt know that :waah: the sales guy told me it was good and charged me $80 noob me trusted him :duh: the psu was voltmodded with bigger heatsinks, gpu & cpu & ram had the same treatment & overclocked. if the psu was any good i wouldn't have had to voltmod it! gpu & ram & hdd have been donored & still going!
i once had 2 x mx200 agp cards and had to find out which one would oc better. i sanded down gpu, took off a good 1mm of plastic. started fine sanding, checking flatness, got her real nice. install, fire up, hmmmm... a few colorfull characters in bios! windows boots, with a few lines & colors. put her in 16bit mode, almost looks normal now! shutdown & remove card, on close inspection find i had gone too far (surprise) and many thin copper wires were just starting to show in the plastic! two of them had tiny breaks in them :waah: only took about .5mm off the second mx200, she's working great on an another old modded oc'ed pc.

^ alot of writing for two relatively small events. lol @ thermalnightmare47's list :D that's so awesome. i've done a transmission aswell actually... my 1st car... i was doing 170 one night, it wouldn't go faster, the next day it started making noises & find oil around my gbox. 1st reverse died, then i think it was 2nd that died next. she was a good car. she took so much abuse, went down fighting, 21 gun salute :insert 21 gun smilies here:

I had a bit of a nightmare recently after a 'series of unfortunate events'!

We ran short of powersurge strips at work and I needed an additional one for my desk. So, I pulled out my 5 way that my pc etc is plugged into and took it into work, but forgot to bring it home at the weekend.

ANyway, saturday morning I start my weekly backup running and head into town to pick up a few odds and ends, stopping for a quiet pint and a bite to eat in one of the pubs. Whilst in said pub, the biggest, baddest thunderstorm Ive seen in some time comes rolling through. Sheets of rain, stonking hailstones, plenty of lightning and a lot of thunder to go with it.

After getting home, said to my housemate, 'You should have seen the storm that went through town', to which he replies 'Its probably the same one that went across here'. Alarms sound and I run upstairs to see my PC still running, but jaggies and flickering all over the monitor.

NOOOOOOO!!! My SLId 7900GTXs appear to have bitten the dust or at least been damaged!!

So, power everything down and get the case up on the desk and try to remove the cards to test individually to see if its one or both cards broken. Theres not much room to hit the PCIE release catch and as I pulled the first card clear, my fingers slipped and I snapped the cap right off the back of the card!! Scratch one 7900 GTX!

After bitching for a while I got the other card out, moved it to the first PCIE slot, got powered up and started some loops of 3DMark06. After about 5 mins, artifacting. Temps were fine on the GPU but the card was fooked!

The end of the tale isnt so bad, Ive just bought an 8800 GTX which is faster than the SLId 7900GTXs and Im insured for accidental damage to my PC, so should see a cheque coming through the post to cover the cost of the 800GTX sometime soon :)

just broke an old LG phone (on purpose) after I recently got a new one.

shot it out of an air cannon at a steel plate in the engineering lab to see just how it would fail, and couldn't find enough pieces to analyze afterwards :naughty::hehe:

    P4 Prestcott skt 478 3.2Ghz dodo

OK Told mrs i'd upgrade her Dell p4-m Laptop with one of the manyP4 cpu's lieing around..
So selected a 3.0 NW 533FSB (realised it was probably only gonna run at 100fsb on her old Laptop
but what the heck - problem was the Heatspreader had to go ( I did try but no chance)
So somewhere between deciding the HS had to go & actually doing the deed - I managed to pick up a
Prestcott 3.2Ghz CPU instead of the Northwood :(

So I started removing HS frm wrong chip - sliced the black trim/glue tru. Heated S to soften thermal stuff
intel use 9worked on an older NW year or so back. Damn HS just didn't wanna move. As p4 skt 478 chips
have so little value I decided to increase the power applied until the dmn thing popped..

So eventually I popped it clean off - but I noticed the chips core had stayed attached to the HS :(
Seems to me that Intel glue the HS's on with some kind of solder or epoxy stuff. What looks ike white stuff in ic is actually metal/solder coloured

So anyone want a cheap Prestcott 3.2/800fsb core hat was working 100% when last used :)
