Hey everyone, I've just taken the plunge and jailbroken my iPhone 3G and would like to ask you all what apps you would recommend installing. I've looked around and most websites seems to say the same few apps over and over (winterboard, vlc4iphone, bossprefs blah blah blah). Which is fine, as these apps give the iPhone a new lease of life. But is there any other apps that you would class as a "must have" and would recommend? I know there are plenty of iPhone related websites to ask questions like this, but I've always had great advice from the bit-tech community. Cheers for any posts!
I have similarly just broken my iphone but i have had the experience from a jailbroken ipod touch. The things that i installed staright away are sbsettings, intelliscreen (im still on the trial) 3g unrestrictor safari download manager and yourtube. (paid apps) Take a look at installous aswell, although that is not in the default cydia repo
not winterboard, it slows down your iphone. bosspref is really old now, install SBsettings here's my MUST have list: -SBsettings (pull down control panel from the top status bar) -Backgrounder (really good, put wunderradio in the background and you have a radio! ) -Lock Calendar (just the calendar on lock screen, but it's free) -Call Clear (clear indevidual calls) -Cycorder (great quick camcorder in day time) -Flashlight (all Appstore ones are crap once you used this one) -dTunes (essential when travelling away from your sync computer) -Notifier (notification icons that should have been there by default) -Quick Dismiss (dismiss alarms etc simply press home button, no need to unlock and then lock) -Quick Scroll (triple tap, then scroll through long webpages with ease) -SpotBright (increase coverage by Spotlight to hidden apps) -SpringJump (adds shortcuts to important pages) -Weather Icon (can't get this to work, but can add a current temperature to status bar) SBsettings is the MUST have, other than that, it's really personal preference. good choice on jailbreaking, no point staying inside Apple's bubble when there are so many good Cydia apps.
I've got SBSetting as someone recommended it over BossPrefs, very nice little app. Intelliscreen looks cool, will give it a go. Also having a read up on installous. I've tried safari download manager but when I install it, websites that have video (like iPlayer, Gamespot for iPhone etc) The manager pops up asking me to download or open in mediaplayer and neither work. If I download it is doesn't work and when I select open in MediaPlayer it says "server error" or something along those lines. So I removed it. Thanks for the suggestions
Jailbreak... hmmm I think this one is the best: http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/take_action&id=6995567
Cheers. I'm glad i've done it I've only had my iPhone for a few days and was pissed off with how apple treats its users (as idiots). I know they need to make it as user friendly as possible for the mass market but more advanced users should be able choose more advanced features. It's like when you start Cydia for the first time and it asks you how advanced your tech knowledge is and it will hide things from you so you can't do any damage. Apple should really look into that. Cheers for the suggestions, Im trying backgrounder and flashlight at the moment. What about gaming? Any recommendations? I've downloaded the snes4iphone app and the source package to get the roms. Very cool!
Haha yeah I seen the story on Twitter earlier today. I love the commentary on the video and the way the thief's grab the stuff . I'll have that one, and that one and....oooh that one too it's so shiny!
I've installed winterboard and like how much I can customize everything. Not really noticed any hit in performance as such.
may be they've fixed winterboard's slowdown problems. sorry, i only get games from appstore as apple aproves all the game i want.
Definitely install PrivaCy. Saurik worked with some of the in-app advertising companies to make it really easy to block most of the identifying information sent back to them from your phone. http://cydia.saurik.com/package/com.saurik.privacy
PrivaCy is a simple solution, but doesn't block everything. add repo from this site, and download the compiled host file, pretty much blocks ALL unwanted network traffic, including ads http://i-phone-home.blogspot.com/
those are Appstore apps, pirated. they are not jailbroken specific app from Cydia. that is also the reason Apple is currently trying very hard to block jailbreaking.
